"Many moons ago, dear Preludiners, JC suggested I try to make a list of my 100-odd favourite songs. It was not easy, but I must admit I found it pleasing to try and distill decades worth of musical loves down to such a small figure.
Here are 10 of them; what do you make of these songs yourself? Vote for the ones you like, and please say a few words about why you like them or not - are they amongst faves too, do you hate them, or somewhere in between?"
The second lot of 10...
11. Visage – Fade To Grey
12. The Temptations – Ain’t Too Proud To Beg
13. R.E.M. – (Don’t Go Back To) Rockville
14. Rolling Stones – Gimme Shelter
15. The Flamingos – I Only Have Eyes For You
16. The Stooges – Loose
17. Maurice & The Radiants - Baby You've Got It
18. Dinosaur Jr. – Freak Scene
19. Bob Dylan - Tombstone Blues
20. Roxy Music – Editions of You

Shelter, Tempts and Dylan are clear winners for me here, I added Rockville to my votes just because, but it plays in a different league. In any case another excellent list with nothing to complain, even if that Vintage track is not much my thing.

The Roxy seems to be a fan favourite but it's a bit too frantic musically and the vocal melody is a bit rubbish. I like it though. And I'd definitely choose a different Tempts tune than that one.
but the others? all fantastic. The best-ever REM tune, Visage's one great moment (and it really is a beautiful thing, even with the silly French bit), Dinosaur Jr's life-enhancing anthem to youthful abandon (is it? it sounds like that, anyway), Dylan at his wildest and most fun. And the one less well-known track is a real gem.

"Tombstone Blues" is a HUGE personal favorite these days (Bloomfield is amazing, and...you know, "the sun's not yellow, it's chicken")..."Shelter" is undeniable (so much atmosphere), "I Only Have Eyes for You" is eternally magical, and "Editions..." is...you couldn't get me to say a negative word about ANYTHING on For Your Pleasure.

It's Fade to Grey and The Stooges which make the cut for me here. I'd probably have picked TV Eye as the better Stooges track, but that would just be being finicky. And when it comes to Tombstone Blues, it's a good track, but I stand by my opinion that if there were two EPS made from Highway 61, the first containing the first and last song from each side, the second containing the inner tracks, I'd rarely listen to the second EP.

"Fade to Grey" is sort of a bedrock synth track for the 80s.. For better or worse, influenced a ton of material that followed in it's wake..

I love Tombstone Blues. It's the epitome of Dylan as the Young Punk.

This is one that some may not know, a Chess single from the mid-60s that I adore for both musical and personal reasons. Maurice & The Radiants - 'Baby You've Got It' ![]()
