the Presley choice is a baffling one. Mediocre at best. The marvelettes is solid but without pizazz.

Hit vs. hit. It pains me to vote for anything that I merely need to turn on the car radio to hear, but I guess B would be slightly harder to find.
Is it just me, or does he say "and I try to kill you" at around 30 seconds? I swear, I've never noticed that before!

I've been getting into Elvis a bit lately. I always liked his voice but I dig the moodier stuff a bit more than the old r n r. He wins this round easily - that first one is OK but not really Cup material now is it?

It's impossible to resist the sexy swagger of The Marvelletes track. It might have invented sassy. Loved that dirty horn solo too. The Elvis is beautifully sung and recorded, but a bit too middle of the road than I want to hear from his peak rock n' roll period.

Easy winner for A, bassy swagger and good vocals.

B. The King.
It crushes. The subtlety in the BVs alone...

B - I’ll go with the king. I’m all Motowned out.

I've never heard "Don't Mess With Bill" before, but it feels entirely generic, and the backing vocals feel particularly disinterested. Nice gritty bit of sax, it doesn't exactly fly, but it helps take the edge off all that saccharine. Pfft. It didn't really sound like it needed to be recorded, there wasn't an awful lot of anything there.
In some ways, it's a brave Elvis pick, not going for the early rock n' roll stuff that still has quite a bit of credibility. This takes me right back to Sunday afternoons as a kid, the sort of slightly mournful track that bored the piss out of me on a rainy day, when there was no escape. I can smell the gravy and slightly burnt roast potatoes, feel the weight of lard in my stomach. The thing is, it's quite magnificently crafted, probably out of solid walnut, and Elvis's vocal is a thing of deep velvet majesty. It's something to bring a musical revolution to the world, and something else to beat the crooners at their own game, at the same time.

I don't expect myself to ever be "Motowned out" and I like this Marvelettes track a lot, but I have to give it to the better tune here.
