Wouldn't argue with Throne of Blood, and never seen Ran, but Welles's Macbeth and Chimes at Midnight are both in with a shout

Don't know about two best, but two I like a lot ...
Have always been a fan of Peter Greenaway's work though today it occurred to me that this one may feel a little dated - Prospero's Books
The second is the 1935 Hollywood version of A Mid Summer Night's Dream. Probably a long way from being the best, but still very charmimg

I like Polanski’s Macbeth. I also like Olivier’s Citizen Hamlet.

I like Polanski’s Macbeth. I also like Olivier’s Citizen Hamlet. I've not seen it and I probably won't. Despite having had a major thing for Jon Finch forever

Ran and Throne of Blood are in a league of their own. If we're going for something different I liked Justin Kurzel's Macbeth which took the idea of "cinematic" and ran with it. A proper audio-visual feast, a cut above the dry period pieces you usually see in modern adaptations.

Ran Throne of Blood The Orson Welles Macbeth + Chimes at Midnight Branaugh's Hamlet + Henry V chide me if you wish, Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet (I Like the almost absurdist, hyper kinetic take on the normally mannered play) Richard III (1995) Richard Loncraine (McKellen's Richard is simply perfect) Titus (1999) Julie Taymor (Underappreciated, her anachronistic take suits the difficult text perfectly..) Othello (1995) Oliver Parker (Branaugh nails Iago)

I also like Olivier’s Citizen Hamlet. I watched that for the first time a few months ago and was very impressed.
