The notion that you cannot be objective about art is ridiculous. Why do thousands, if not millions of people, descend to Florence and Rome to gawp at the treasures there? Sure, some might do it out of a cultural bucket list trip, but the fact remains that they represent in a way a summit of sorts of cultural achievement. Are Michaelangelo's efforts greater than that of Tracey Emin or Damian Hirst? Yes of course they are. It is just that conceptual art has become fashionable whereas more traditional forms have become "old hat" for some reason. High culture has become seen as "elitist" whereas in reality it is just better, but no-one wants to admit it. I doubt you'd be surprised to learn that I know people who would much rather vacation in Laughlin, Nevada than Florence or Rome. there's no accounting for taste. I'm not saying they are right, I'm just saying that if they say "Tory, you are wrong. How dare you omit Laughlin, Nevada as a magical place" that they they are not persecuting you by saying so. I think Mr. Smart Guy suggesting this sort of preference is the result of addiction & enslavement is crazy talk.

Famous modern art comes down to artists/their agents being good sales people. If they can convince a few influential people, they're set.

There's nothing particularly surprising in that article.

No one forces one to go and look at that stuff, and if you do go and see it, you can make up your own mind whether YOU like it.

There's nothing particularly surprising in that article. I thought he made a good point about the galleries, people tend not to think of galleries like Tate Britain in those kind of commercial terms.

The teacher asking the question sounds like a pretentious boob.
