Many times. But not in many years. Why?

I've never been, but I'd like to go. I have friends that go pretty much every year and love it.

I’m the only Californian I know who’s never been to Mexico - not even Tijuana - or Hawaii. My kids have been to both, but not me.

I’ve been to a resort island as part of a Disney cruise with my wife and kids and to Tijuana as a shiftless young adult with some nogoodnik friends. They were not very similar at all.

I'm thinking about January, somewhere not too busy but with enough of Mexico about it to make it worthwhile.
I'm not sure I'll go, because I'm a bit apprehensive about flying so far. But I'm very keen to see the country.

A friend's parents own a tequila bar here and they go down to Mexico a couple times a year. Any time I see pictures of where they are staying it makes me want to jump on a flight and go there myself. If you'd like, I can get some recommendations for you. Do you want to go to Mexico City or are you more interested in a relaxing kinda beach-type vacation?

I'm more interested in the cities, but maybe not Mexico City itself. Would be great if you find anything out, J! No rush, mind.

Thanks. I'm looking now. But I'm also interested in India, China, Brazil, Argentina, Thailand...
Where to go in the world?

I've only been to Cozumel. It's a "resort" island, but large enough that there are plenty of non-resort things to do. It's just off the Yucatan Peninsula, so you're pretty close to some of the more impressive Mayan ruins.
Tons of friends have been to Mexico City, and it's high on my list - tons of great food, tons of great art, and all sorts going on.
Oaxaca is another spot I'd like to travel to - quite a few of my friends have been there. It's probably best known as a foodie destination.
The fears of crime are, I think, most prevalent in the communities closer to the US border, where many of the cartels control towns. I think that's far less widespread the further south you go.
