As a society make it our top priority to allow our fellow citizens to flourish by providing quality education, housing & employment to everyone. That's a bit of a vague assertion when dealing with the very concrete issue of people who commit crimes and the appropriate punishment for them. People will always commit crimes - it doesn't matter how much you pump into those things you mention. The US in particular is an extraordinarily violent place, which means that people are more likely to commit violent crimes as the statistics show. Sadly since the BLM marches and calls to defund the police, homicide rates have risen in some areas by 40%. That culture of violence isn't going to go away any time soon either. quillette.com/2021/01/27/did-the-blm-protests-against-the-police-lead-to-the-2020-spike-in-homicides/I don't want to comment too much on the US system, which has a very idiosyncratic culture of violence and incarceration, complicated by industrialised and private prisons. It is not anywhere near what we have in the UK.

I don't see my comment as being vague in the slightest. It's simple common decency which is sadly not too common. People probably always will commit crimes, but to suggest that things will never improve regardless of the funding allocated is irrational.
And why attribute the homicide rate increase to BLM marches & calls to defund the police?
We are in a pandemic with no end in sight. People are afraid, strapped for cash - if not dead broke due to the loss of their job - and guns are available to anyone here if you really want one.
"Alternative explanation" sounds a lot like "alternative facts" to me.

It would help massively if society was on a more level existence.

Of course it would. But the devil is in the detail isn't it. And dealing with concrete, everyday issues such as crime and prisons is arguably as important.
