He reminds me a bit of Cleese - attacked by a lot of people today for his reactionary views, a once-great, hugely influential talent and entertaining interviewee become almost unbearably humourless and arrogant - YET still kind of interesting.
The interviewer is his cousin, presumably one of the few left he feels he can trust to be sycophantic enough. Still you get the face twisting up when he recalls the misery he's suffered.

Oh I like Cleese. I completely understand why he's appalled by the utter stupidity of others these days. He's given enough humour to the world to be a grumpy old man anyway. Who can blame him frankly?
Morrissey has always been up himself but he talks some sense too in that clip. Of course, he's not averse to some self-aggrandizing (the comments on veganism are hilarious as if he is largely responsible for some cultural change) but, whatever.

He's spot on with what he says at 9.30.

He's spot on with what he says at 9.30. Why do you think this is?

Ads were always moronic and lowest common denominator. Pop music has always been run by gangsters and moneymen. He's getting older and blaming it on the world. As most of us do. Doesn't he remember building career on songs about how shit everything is and how it was better (sometimes) in the past? That said, still a damn good interviewee.

In the mid/late 90's I worked at an Our Price store in Altrincham. 3/4 of The Smiths were customers on at least one occasion (the exception being Mike Joyce, who became a regular and would chat for ages, couldn't get rid of him..)
Johnny Marr was a joy, bought all the Curtis Mayfield stuff we had and was happy to chat about music, guitars and the Smiths. Joyce was a sweetheart, a nice, funny guy.
Mozzer was a cunt. Arrogant, rude, entitled...Knew that I knew who he was and made me feel small, as if me acknowledging him automatically made me a nuisance. I know I was just some guy in a shop and he might have been having an off day, but I think how people treat retail/waiting staff etc. speaks volumes. I loved The Smiths as much as anybody, bought their last couple of albums upon release, read their NME features and taped Peel sessions. Most of it still stands up incredibly well to my ears. However I've never warmed to Moz's solo stuff at all, past the first couple of singles and bits of the first album.
As a person, he's an embarrassment, a disgrace. That persona was effective when he was the fey 'back bedroom rebel' or whatever the quote was on the South Bank Show but as a 60 something man, it's a bit tragic. I find him more laughable than anything though...The song titles could be Viz style parodies half the time.
Just my ten bob.

So that's what happened to Johnny Vaughan. What a meteoric rise and descent to and from fame.

Interesting to hear Tony W's memories of Morrissey in his early years. Seems he's always been a c**t.
