There's a definite King Crimson type vibe about the first album, the prog leanings are quite strong. Very different to Ziggy in that regard.

They'd probably have become a bit like Queen!

I have to say although I still like a lot of the album, its appeal has faded a bit for me in recent years and I recognise the 'prog' tendencies G mentions.

When we say prog what are we talking about here? BOB presumably? Parts of Sea Breezes?
That's it really. It's an odd album, their weirdest and yet it's their debut. Side one is magnificent. I wouldn't change a thing. As a sustained run of songs it's as good as Ziggy's opening blast imo. The BOB is the most out there thing they ever did. Sometimes I think it's a failed experiment but then some of the individual parts are brilliant although Ferry is pushing it at the beginning with that deliberately ugly melody. However after a minute and half things pick up with that little oboe melody from Mackay and that odd section accompanied by the sound effects with that wistful sax melody before they do that classic Roxy thing of throwing in some fucked up rock n roll music from Mars before giving way to Eno's delightfully English interlude and then finally climaxing with Ferry in fucked up mode again. It's almost like a collage from a movie soundtrack edited together with the visual context deliberately removed. I dig it. I always have.
Chance Meeting is great! One of those perfect miniature Ferry lyrics that really captures a moment in time. "I know that time spent well is so rare" is such a great line. So true. That long, feedback encrusted solo accompanied by Ferry's piano is sorta perfect. You can feel the pain, the heartbreak, something left unresolved. A wound. They were always clever like that.
I've always had a very soft spot for the final two tracks as well. Sea Breezes has that great line about angels of course but there is some real musical magic in there too...the lapping of the waves, Ferry's haunting melody (equally matched by Mackay's on the oboe), the fucking way Ferry says "a shaaaaaaame!" is sooooo good. The other section is so fucking odd! Such a curveball! Maybe a bit too contrived in a "were gonna do something really fucked up here!" kinda way but, like BOB, I still dig it. Such balls!
Bitter's End is quite marvellous too. What a ridiculous ending. A real throwback. This could be out of Brideshead Revisited or something. Eno's lovely backing vocals accompanied by that evocative sax floating away into the night in the background. All that upper class romance and decadence but tinged with a peculiarly English melancholy. The passing of time. The end of the party. Ahhhh that's the stuff.

Well yeah, it's the second side I dig more these days and it's for all those reasons.
And we're seeing them in October!

Great album, but they would do better.

Great album, but they would do better. Next time out, of course. But vies with Stranded as second-best.

I enjoy it often in my poncey clothes with rum & cokes.
I took three from side one which surprised me because I love side two. "remake.." is just a total blast of rock & roll otherness. I think it still swings 50 years later. I love the end of "ladytron" where we all rock out with the envelope generator. "2HB" is just the prettiest thing. His voice seems no more jarring than other elements. I think the secret weapons in Roxy (in a lot of ways) are Mackay & Manzanera. they seem to keep things grounded in an earthbound rock and roll. the weird vocals and flourishes thrive for me as artsy rock largely because the rock part is so firmly grounded.
I didn't really live with this record until late 70's. "for your pleasure" was on my radar but I didn't really hear them much until "stranded" I took to the debut like a duck to water. it's one of my favorites. Ferry's (ahem) vocal mannerisms would soon become more streamlined but I don't think they get in the way on the debut at all. it's just one of many "everything but the kitchen sink" qualities that I think makes it pretty special.

The triple whammy on side 1 for me (but I love the rest almost as much).
But my favouritest is If There Is Something...

Interesting comment - did you know that Pete Sinfield produced the record? (I think they may have used KC's mellotron too, feel I read that somewhere.) I went with the massive "Ladytron" (the oboe solo channeling "Runaway" is just so good), "2HB" and the strange and impractical "The Bob (Medley)". I would like to have been present as they were discussing that song.

Tour starts tomorrow in Canada and I'm really interested to see the reviews.
50 years is one fuck of a long time - how many bands, even with long gaps, tour so long after their debut? The Stones, of course, but not many others.

There really hasn't been a continuous Roxy since the 80s, and then it became the Bryan Ferry show . Meanwhile, the remaining two went off to the Explorers to do Bryan Ferry music, lol.
The Explorers "Lorelei" Two Worlds Apart" "Falling for the Nightlife" (Tocata 10/09/1985)
