Didn't go, don't regret it. Am I wrong?
He even did a book signing in LA - on his birthday!
I'm sure it was great.

Didn't go, don't regret it. Am I wrong? He even did a book signing in LA - on his birthday! I'm sure it was great. Oh damn, that I wold have gone to!! I am thinking about getting that lyrics book. He really does have the best lyrics and having them all cleared up would be nice. There was an old site called Roxyrama that had all the lyrics and it was always illuminating when I'd read them.

I have a feeling I might get upgraded for the gig on Monday. There's still quite a few seats that haven't been booked.

It was flat-out ridiculous for the LA shows. I know people who paid exorbitant amounts for tickets the second they were available and ended up sitting behind people who waited till the last minute and got heavily discounted ones.
Seems like they really underestimated the amount of people willing to break the bank to see the old fragrant lady parts.
I guess I have some regret, particularly knowing that it was a great show according to those who went, and in the end reasonably priced. But having taken advantage of cheap tickets for other big shows in the past (I saw the final Mike Nesmith show for less than the reduced tickets for Roxy, for example), I figure it all evens out in the end.

Well I've got a front-row seat - but up in the stalls or whatever you call them - so I won't be behind anyone.
We might be in for some surprises, because they've had a break since the US leg of the tour, and they might have jigged things around a bit. I really want to hear 'Mother of Pearl', 'Street Life' or maybe even 'Beauty Queen' or 'For Your Pleasure' (which they haven't done yet).
I really want this to be great. It did seem like Ferry's voice got a bit better for the later dates. And Glasgow was always a major Roxy stronghold.

First point:
I was a bit worried after hearing some of the live clips and Ferry’s voice prior to the gig so let’s get that out of the way first. Yes his voice is shot and yes he is definitely saving himself as best he can throughout the setlist so that he can step up a bit during the likes of More Than This or Virginia Plain but I have to say it didn’t bother me that much and credit to Ferry, he found a way into his old songs that made the most of what he has left. Ok it was a little bit too subtle for a venue as big as the Hydro and backing singers certainly did some heavy lifting, especially on the likes of Dance Away but, Christ, the fella is 77, it’s Roxy Music, it’s Ladytron, it’s Oh Yeah, it’s In Every Dream Home…… I could live with it.
Second point: A few years back I saw Brian Wilson and despite his voice being shot it was genuinely one of the best and most moving gigs I’ve ever been to. Regardless of his croaky vocals or the lack of Beach Boys just hearing the likes of Surfer Girl or In My Room or, Christ, any number of other songs that have sound tracked my life was a special experience. Full of nostalgia and yearning but a danceable joy too. Hell even a few manly tears. I had the same experience here really. I was genuinely moved, especially by the mark 2 songs I have to say (Oh Yeah, More Than This, Dance Away) which, in this context, with an elderly, fragile Ferry weaving his way through them sat by the keyboard possessed even more regret and sweet longing that I couldn’t help but relate to my own life. I noticed that women in the audience were especially appreciative of these songs (one highlight: two drunk women dancing past me to More Than This).
The rest....
At the end of Remake/Remodel the words “Roxy Music” were emblazoned on the stage screens and I had a little goosebump moment. Hey, it’s Roxy Music! I have to say the stage set up was well done and the visuals were impressive.
Out of the Blue suffered from not having Eddie Jobson’s careering violin solo but Manzanera did a decent job substituting.
The Bogus Man was good, if truncated. Such an odd song! On something like this Ferry’s vocals these days are close enough to the original too and it was great hearing something so uncanny and odd in such a setting. Not that you forget how weird they could be but it’s still surprising how a band so odd and singular could not only have hits but actually become popular. Different times I guess.
Ladytron. The highlight probably. I defy any Roxy fan to hear Mackay’s oboe intro live and not get goosebumps. One of rocks great, weird intros and they hit a peak on the outro....Manzanera’s crashing guitar chords and feedback, Thompson throwing in some huge, cavernous fills. That’s the stuff.
While My Heart is Still Beating was an odd choice but here they turned it into something that was closer to their debut than the 80s soundworld of Avalon. Manzanera contributing some gnarly mark 1 guitar. An indulgence perhaps but whatever.
Oh Yeah was a highlight. It’s such a great, romantic, evocative song. Ferry can’t hit the high notes but the backing singers can. I was singing along to the whole thing.
If There Is Something had some of the groovy, extended atmospherics of the original and the Viva version. It suffered a bit because of Ferry but it’s such a great song and, again, in this context lines like “the grass is greener”, “takes me right back…” etc couldn’t help but move. The inevitably of it all. Powerful stuff.
In Every Dream Home.... Great! The drum crack that follows “but you blew my mind” was HUGE to the point where people seemed to audibly gasp and the outro was marvellous. And that was it for the first part of the set. Tara followed this servicing as an intermission: an extended version, ghostly, lovely, dreamy and then it was into The Main Thing. Like While My Heart thus was beefed up a bit but it’s a great, slinky groove. Ferry goes a bit absent here but it doesn’t matter that much as the band and the “all night” backing vocals pick up the slack.
My Only Love has a long Manzanera solo that once again harkens back to Roxy mark 1. I liked this version a lot. Good stuff.
To Turn You On is such a delicate, beautiful song and watching an elderly Ferry singing it was quite touching and sweet. Almost like a solo performance. A half remembered tribute to a former lover, long gone. Ahhh life.
Dance Away and More Than This lifted the whole place. Ferry can’t hit those wonderful high notes in the latter but he clearly steps up a bit vocally here to give the song something of the performance it deserves and the energy of the crowd seems to carry him and us. People are dancing, women are shouting “we love you Bryan!”. I’m moved again. Sadly they don’t perform the gorgeous outro (one of their most beautiful moments) but you can’t have everything. Ferry is clearly enjoying himself and the crowd erupts at the end. It is a great song. They follow it with Avalon and there’s some lovely moments from the backing singers as the song seems to float off into the ether and with that it’s the end of that part of the show. Back to mark 1.
Love is the Drug was a little bit off to my ears but Ferry is more up front and giving it some. They definitely seem buoyed by More Than This and the crowd are feeling it too.
Editions of You then crashes in, Paul Thompson is killing it (rock solid throughout), Ferry is enjoying it and the songs crazed professor energy and early Roxy weirdness is bracing and wonderful, heightened by hearing it in such a big, corporate venue. In the moment you are reminded just how great and weird Roxy were. Ridiculous stuff.
Then Virginia Plain. Of course. Celebratory and I’m singing every word doing my best Ferry impression. “What’s her name?” “VIRGINIA PLAIN!” the crowd shouts on cue. The old tricks are the best.
Jealous Guy. They’ve been doing this the whole tour but the timing was nice given John’s recent birthday. It’s a beautiful tribute and again I’m touched, by the song, the performance, by John Lennon, by the whole goddamn thing. The joys of getting older. It’s almost too much at times!
One more song…oh go on then! Do The Strand. By this point I’ve got my eye on the watch as I know I need to leg it to get the bus so I’m standing by the stairs which actually leave me facing the centre of the stage away from everybody else and I have a brief, solitary moment, just me and Roxy Music! The whisky is wearing off but I’m singing along with some gusto and couldn’t give a fuck. Ferry is doing silly little flamenco style poses (“Bored with the Beguine!”) and it’s marvellous. “Rhododendron, is a nice flower!” is one of my favourite Roxy lines and it brings me deep joy.
And that was that. I’m happy, satisfied and very glad I went. The final curtain call. Viva Roxy.

The visuals at the end of Remake/ Remodel with all the different Roxy logos seemingly flying out of the screens was masterful.
Two girls in front of me jumped out of their seats when the drum crack happened in Dream Home. Don't think they knew it or Virginia Plain, when they had the same reaction when everybody else bar them shouted VIRGINIA PLAIN.

Fuck me, this is good. Big thanks for posting it JC. Everybody watch this now. It's easy to feel that youtube is just part of the furniture these days, but this reminded me of when it was brand new and exciting treasures were discovered on the regular.. That kind of bootleggy, illicit buzz.. Never seen a full set by this line up and the version of 'Dream Home' alone is astonishing, seeing Manzanera going over to Eno, as the latter manipulates the lead guitar part on some kind of hand held device.. A full live, 'Bogus Man'.. Bloody hell.. Get it watched, you lot.

Yeah, I wrote something like 'this is INCREDIBLE!' but deleted it, 'cos I often say that and it starts to become meaningless.
It does give you that buzz, yes, absolutely. I know what you mean. That same feeling you had when you first heard them. Strange noises made by weird-looking men, unfathomable. But you're pulled in. It's exciting.
One hell of a band back then.
