I’m actually a bit surprised by the “I keep it private” theme that seems to be emerging here. I hadn’t anticipated that.

I was with a friend at a thing with his family. somebody came up to him with a question. "hey, YOU know movies, who was that guy...."
my friend cut him off. yeah, he knew movies because he'd spent a lot of time watching them. He told his family member to go buy a movie guide and turned his back on him. I was pretty taken aback. I guess he'd had enough "hey, you like movies..." conversations to last him a lifetime and I don't think he was 30. on some level I get it.

I don't know how many years I'd have to dial back this hypothetical scenario, but I'd imagine a polling of the same crew (myself included) 20 or 30 years ago would have yielded a very different response.

I seem to recall a similar thread on BCB not terribly long ago, and I don't think this particular theme came up as much.

Well, there you go. I have a limited repertoire.

I’m less of an evangelist now. Happy to talk music, but I recognised ages ago that other people tend to want to talk about family, football, beer, work etc. Me and the folks I socialise with exhausted all the obvious music questions a long time ago. Much like these boards; there’s occasional good music chat, but mainly it’s the ‘General’ section (and maybe Politics) that generates the most real debate.

I've gone from talking about music ALL THE TIME to now not talking about it at all.
Our neighbour is a band manager and we had an up and coming young NY pop star over for lunch just before Xmas. She had heard of Herzog (our cat is named after him), and the chat turned to Popol Vuh, modular synthesizers etc. It made me feel like a teenager a bit if I'm honest.

The only time I ever care to flex my bona fides is when I’m with other music obsessives. Everywhere else, it’s like they caught you wanking.
There's some truth in that.
But I stand by it (and the room the collection takes in my flat). Music collecting is what I did for the past 50 years - and still do, compulsively. Still: I'm always embarrassed when answering the usual "but what instrument do you play?" question with "turntables..." hastening to add "but not as an instrument, I just used to be an amateur DJ yonks ago." And getting bemused looks from virtually everyone visiting ("Have you never thought of using to Spotify?")
For quite some time, I was the guy who won all the music quizzes in my local pub (so much so that they changed the formula to "mostly metal" or questions about obscure bands that had played live there at some point). By now, the knowledge gap (roughly 1995 to now) has gotten too big and my memory isn't all that good anymore either.

That's really funny.
Thinking about it, I find it really hard to discuss music with anyone. Even answering the "what kind of music do you like most?" question is kind of impossible, so I end up saying stuff like "oh, 70% of my collection is broadly rock from 60s to 80s, but right now I'm mostly interested in avantgarde Volksmusik, John Zorn's Book of Angels series and virtuoso accordion players" which ends the conversation.

Always.
Once the mainstream embraced it I won't bother anymore...

Thing is, this might be misconstrued as a throwaway comment destined to provoke laughs, but it actually totally reflects my current mindset.
