Words like 'prison', 'university', 'hospital' can be preceded by 'the' or not, with a subtle difference in meaning. Without 'the', you're talking about the idea in general. With 'the' (which is less common in British Eng), you're referring more to the place. It's easy, really. It works with 'bed', too. When would you say 'he's in the bed'? It's possible, but not common. Helps if you work this stuff out for yourselves, you know. Couldn't help yourself, could you?

I think they're more likely to say 'she's in the hospital' where we'd say 'she's in hospital'

"I'm going to the goddam hospital, gee whiz!"
I now have a wider appreciation of the cultural use of the definite article, thanks.

I messaged a UK friend about Gaffigan and he mentioned the joke fell flat for him because the UK doesn't have hot pockets. What kind of society do you people live in? Boris looks like the kind of guy who would love hot pockets so I hope the situation is rectified.

What kind of society do you people live in? A society of adults? Adults who call each other by baby names because they can't be arsed to say someone's full name.

I had to look them up. They look similar to crispy pancakes which people were obsessed with here.

I think I achieved a state of nirvana the day I barbecued chicken and bacon crispy pancakes. The term "taste sensation" doesn't come close to covering the glory.
