Beliefs, behaviour or language that assumes moral, political or intellectual superiority over another individual based on their membership of a non-elective group to which individuals are assigned at birth, and seeks to oppress them in any way. Or something like that

Prejudice based on race, in a nutshell. so, what is 'race'. In simple terms (what else?!) ethnicity and/or colour. For the more complicated answer that you would prefer, I refer you to Google...

Or something like that I'd be a bit more specific regarding the non-elective group being related to skin colour, appearance, ethnicity or nationality (or the perceptions of those), but yep, pretty much what Ray said.

More contemporary definitions also include making generalised statements about a group of people based on anecdotal observations rather than hard evidence.
"The Chinese like money"
"The Germans have no sense of humour"
These things are now racist, or at least you can be called one if you make that sort of observation. It doesn't ring strictly true with me.

i personally find this thread a bit of a minefield. i'm not sure if it was intended as such but i would advise a cautionary approach from those who choose to participate in it. there is a hell of a risk of causing upset.

My view is that it's not whether you are a racist or not, it's how much of a racist you are.

My view is that it's not whether you are a racist or not, it's how much of a racist you are. I'd agree with that. We all have prejudices, and preferences. It seems to me that it's how we act on them, allow them to direct our thinking, and speak about them that matters.
