A/k/a, "Fange, please post cool things we should hear" thread. The similar thread over on the other board was an absolute revelation to me, and introduced me to some tracks that have become mainstays. I figure we can maybe fire one up here, where we can post those jazz tracks that have cross-pollinated with soul/funk. I'll kick us off with a few that have been in heavy rotation for me lately.

While he never really made it big under his own banner, Leon Spencer held his own most admirably on the clutch of records he made with Prestige with the likes of Idris Muhammad, Grover Washington, Hubert laws and Melvin Sparks. Some smokin' funky early-70s soul-jazz.

I thought the entire point of this site was to get away from the evil that was fange approved soul?
Ok, maybe not the entire point, but you know, wishful thinking...

You love it, DF. Looking forward to you posting a few tunes from Coil's soul jazz period.

As nolamike may not know, I'm somewhat allergic to funk and have very strict rules about what counts as soul, so I haven't got much to contribute here, but this single, and the album it comes from, featuring a genuine soul singer of the 1950s and ’60s interpreting a blistering track by Gil Scott-Heron, is a rare gem.

In terms of SOUL JAZZ releases, HUSTLE! this is great (though I'd lose the reggae take on the Sugarhill Gang track) Soul Jazz's own 'sample mix':

Dizzy Gillespie - Rutabaga Pie
I don't know if this is what you're looking for but this is my favorite record/song/life affirming, joy giving piece of music discovery of the last 10 or 15 years. I'd post it on a New Wave thread just so people can hear it. It seems to be an obvious reaction to Watermelon Man but, who cares?
The clips on YouTube (with the exception of the full Soul & Salvation LP) are versions of this clip with fake live audience sounds and a duller mix than exists on the LP.
Full album - Song starts at about 30:40

Great picks, tg and Skope!
Can we get a little outside? Let's step outside for a minute...
This one always sounded to me like a No Wave track, only a decade before No Wave was a thing.

Also, because nothing says "soul jazz" like a little harp:
