"Under the agreement, the independent sector will reallocate almost its entire national hospital capacity to the NHS and will be reimbursed at cost."
If it's fair cost, that's good to hear. A lot of doctors work in the NHS and privately, and medics are on the front line, good to see them pooling and helping each other.

Christopher Lydon's Open Source podcsat (the world's first and longest running podcast! as they like to say) had an enlightening episode on the dreaded virus. radioopensource.org/springtime-in-the-plague-year/Talked to an Italian focussed journo, two professors in the medical field, and the writer Andrew Sullivan (who lived through the AIDS crisis so has a thing or 2 to say about how we may get through all this emotionally). I went through the spectrum of emotions.

I looked at a map of the UK for the concentration of cases of COVID and it looked like the Scottish Highlands was the least severely hit. And then I read an article about how some Scottish MP is 'livid' because so many folk from the cities have driven up there for a quiet holiday, a place to get away from all the madness. You can't really blame them, can you?

If I had a bolthole in the countryside or could afford a 3 month stay somewhere, I'd be there in a flash.

Apparently Snowdonia was the busiest it's ever been.
I have sympathy with Johnson. Everyone before was saying "Boris is in league with the far-right. He's fascist."
I think this conclusively proves beyond any doubt that the man is a liberal - the notion of a crackdown on par with an authoritarian is just anathema to him. He wants people to make their own judgements, to be responsible.
Of course, there are a fuckton of irresponsible idiots out there ignoring the advice, so it may yet come that a draconian crackdown comes.

I think this conclusively proves beyond any doubt that the man is a liberal - the notion of a crackdown on par with an authoritarian is just anathema to him. He wants people to make their own judgements, to be responsible. It is much less ideological and far more about him wanting to be liked. He's always told people what they've wanted to hear. He's having to break the habit of a lifetime here. Incidentally I don't think many were calling him "a fascist", much less "everyone". That just seems to be you discrediting an opposing viewpoint by characterising it in silly and hysterical tones. There are authoritarian and anti-democratic aspects to this government which we can discuss, although it's a bit off topic for this thread.

What’s the shocking thing about this?

Not saying it's shocking exactly, but it's the highest-profile case yet, and it's kind of 'how much further can this man fall?', you know?
I've yet to see it verified on the BBC or The Guardian, which suggests it might just be rumour...

I've spent the last wee mostly stoned and have largely avoided the news and the net.
It's been nice.
My folks are 75 and are still visiting their allotment but that's it.
What a shitshow.

I've spent the last wee mostly stoned Far be it for me to deny others the pleasure of the occasional spliff, but surely you can lay off it while you urinate? Not even Rayge does that.
