Fetch the Bolt Cutters is out this week, apparently "a record for our times" couldn't be timed more perfectly, etc. And in this time of isolation, yeah - someone doing a self-therapy session in their house, working in tandem with...their house - percussion is her beating on the walls, scrawling on a chalkboard, her (five?) dogs are given vocal credit - seems like the proverbial 'story that writes itself.'
And indeed, universally, that seems to be what's happening. I don't know that I've seen such universal acclaim for a new record in my lifetime. Not a single less-than-glowing review, and everyone from Rolling Stone to Pitchfork has basically declared it the presumptive record of the decade.
"Shameika" is a pretty cool song, the recording is very intimate and intense (though all I can think is how Brittany Howard did something similar last year and it was every bit as intimate and intense, just not timed to when we were all locked up in our houses), and I get that our grandchildren need their own "Sgt. Pepper," but...is this it?
I like it, I'm impressed with it, and she certainly has captured something universal at least atmospherically, but...I'm just not hearing the songs. They're good, and I'm glad she's not holding back, but there's not enough going on there to really make me care.
Is it just me? Or is this maybe a record to admire rather than love?

I'm not particularly interested in hearing it, but yeah - what the fuck's going on? I keep seeing these articles, or bits of articles, on various social media, saying this is the greatest thing ever.
It's all a bit odd.

I think she has also had a habit of "keeping people hungry", so to speak (maybe like Kate Bush or Scott Walker or something), so that when she finally pokes her head above the parapet with something new, it's a pretty enormous deal to her fans.
I'm generally pro-Fiona (When the Pawn... is the one I like), but the description of this as a sort of "Soundtrack from STOMP!" has kept me feeling that "I'll get around to it someday".

I haven't heard it yet, but it's been a hell of a long time since reviews have made me think "geez Louise I gotta hear THIS!", but that's how I feel here. Being also pro-Apple should make it easier to get the required motivation.

It's all a bit odd. I’ve read a couple of reviews. Quite a lot about the lyrics rather than the music. I dunno, I’ll give it a listen but I feel that some reviewers seem to focus more on the words than I naturally do so I tend to find hyped albums less musically impressive than they do. I’m willing to be impressed of course, I mean I’d like to be blown away but I rarely feel in sync with reviews these days. Maybe people are searching for some grand artistic zeitgeisty statement too. We’ll see

I listened to it the other night and quite enjoyed it. I have no idea where she lives but the album gave me a real "New Orleans" vibe, for some reason. I need to listen again when it's not so, uh, 'late at night', if you get my drift.

Maybe people are searching for some grand artistic zeitgeisty statement too. Ain' no maybe about it. I think that's what's behind it, and I think people are latching on to the first thing that sorta kinda meets that need - although of course she started working on it years ago, before we knew anything about Corona. I have an acquaintance that's a close friend of hers and he says that a) she's pretty reclusive by nature and b) she's a huge Kate Bush fan, and has been influenced by her approach of coming out with records only when she's ready to unleash a "big statement." Neither of those surprised me. I mean, I'm happy for her and all, and I suspect she's had to put up with a lot of bullshit in her time, so if this is freeing for her, good for her - making music is a great way to do it. But it's in my nature to, when the whole world is jumping on the bandwagon, at least say "wait...hold on a minute here."

I'm listening now.
Some of it is terrible. This kind of semi-spoken shouty angry nonsense.

Quelle fucking surprise.
Ed O'Brien or whatever you call him from Radiohead was interviewed on the BBC yesterday about his new 'project'. They were asking him about making music during the lockdown, how isolation helps the creative process, all that. And I was thinking 'who in their right mind needs to hear this moody beep-beep shit?'. What purpose does it serve?
I haven't heard either the Fiona Apple or the Ed O'B stuff and I guess there are differences in style - but it comes from the same insufferable combination of self-obsession and joylessness and they just HAVE to foist it on the world. They should just go and sit on a park bench feeding birds until this is over.
