Quelle fucking surprise. I haven't heard either the Fiona Apple or the Ed O'B stuff and I guess there are differences in style - but it comes from the same insufferable combination of self-obsession and joylessness and they just HAVE to foist it on the world. They should just go and sit on a park bench feeding birds until this is over. isn't that what creative people do, John? the ones that make a living at it, anyway. they foist their insufferable combination on the world and then move on to the next thing.

but where's the beauty? the sense of fun? the attempt to make something that lasts?
It's a very long way from anything I would consider as useful or helpful or anything-ful.

Where's the desire to connect with people outwith your own little group?

Quelle fucking surprise. Ed O'Brien or whatever you call him from Radiohead was interviewed on the BBC yesterday about his new 'project'. They were asking him about making music during the lockdown, how isolation helps the creative process, all that. And I was thinking 'who in their right mind needs to hear this moody beep-beep shit?'. What purpose does it serve? I haven't heard either the Fiona Apple or the Ed O'B stuff and I guess there are differences in style - but it comes from the same insufferable combination of self-obsession and joylessness and they just HAVE to foist it on the world. They should just go and sit on a park bench feeding birds until this is over. ‘Kinnel !!!

People find those things all sorts of different ways. Do you insist that paintings be 'fun'? Movies? As for beauty, ear of the beholder, right? It's not all about you, John. As for 'something that lasts', I think five days after release is a little early to be judging that, don't you?

I've been meaning to listen to it. I would say I'm a fan, but not a devotee. It's not like I reference her lyrics in everyday conversation.

The long long long New Yorker piece that heralded the album's creation and arrival inadvertently may have sealed her off from being taken seriously by anyone other herself and her cult.

Her interest and knowledge of problems facing indigenous people was surprising and impressive. I like the record. do we still call them records? others are calling it a "statement" but that doesn't sound like something I'd say.
I think there's some serendipity that it came out just when it did. no amount of planning can account for that. it's like when Bette Midler released "from a distance" and it dropped just as anxiety about the first Gulf War was bubbling up. the song became a sort of anthem of that conflict. I'll admit to being something of a Bette Midler fan so that always bothered me about it. the fact of the matter is - it did very well for her and gave some people some sort of comfort during the conflict regardless of her intention when she recorded it.
Hearing F.Apple's songs of isolation and hearing her dog's barking while she sings really fits the whole zeitgeist right now. good for her. I never really paid much attention to her but this strikes me as a very mature work - especially lyrically but I'm always a sucker for ANY production trickery whatsoever so I like it quite a bit.
