When is a chair not a chair? “By Design,” a new exhibition opening Oct. 24 at the Denver Art Museum, gives a range of witty and surprising answers. Mexican artist Valentina Gonzalez Wohlers’s “Prickly Pair Chair” (2009) riffs on 1960s Pop Art, with fuchsia Louis XVI-style arms and legs, lime upholstery and cactus-like appendages sprouting up from the back. The “Joe Sofa” (1970), created by Italian artists Donato D’Urbino, Paolo Lomazzi and Jonathan De Pas, is a large baseball mitt to curl up in; the iconic sofas fetch up to $12,000 on resale sites.www.denverartmuseum.org/en/exhibitions/by-design

What is going on with that chair in the ‘93 pic? It has a rug draped over the seat (maybe to hide something stashed beneath it, and there's a cushion dumped on top of it. Reasons lost in the mists.

This chat with Laurence Llewellyn Bowen about his love of Maximalist design was highly entertaining. I listened on the way to a long lunch in Henley and was laughing at his hatred of the "modernist" attitude. Sorry G!
TIP - don't watch it, just listen to it as there's some weird thing going on with the picture.

Dog, those stone steps are ugly and dysfunctiona.
And, as my Mum would say, it's a bugger to heat. Although presumably that's somewhere warmer than here.

I imagine him coming down those steps abs-o-lute-ly LOAD-ED wearing a suit, with a cocktail in his hand, while his guests sit and watch, amused.
I'm probably thinking of Lenny Bruce's 'white collar drunks' sketch

I like it. That gallery and everything. The steps don’t look as steep as most staircases do would probably be ok. I like that mid-century modern aesthetic. I think it was probably pretty cool and aspirational in the 70s which were my formative years for all things visual.
