There are many layers at play: Historical, cultural, Institutional, societal, etc., all the very large reckonings and soul searching, as the personal, the macro, the micro soul searching is going on. Messy. The worldwide protests seem to be universal in that they are sprung from a hit nerve specific to each country, in their own specific contexts.

Markus, you can't use a "Friends" meme until you've recited a limerick and stood on one foot. and walked a mile in my shoes. and balanced a payroll....

didn't you hear? racism in America is over! we don't need the Voter's Right Act anymore. states can make people of color stand in line for hours during a lethal pandemic and it's NOT RACIST!! so, how can "White Privilege" exist if racism is over? anyone for Tennis? The sort of racism that’s discussed here is practically exclusive to America. Is it? My personal opinion is that the levels of oppression are just more firmly baked in to UK society so people don't even try. I'm always amused at the discussions of class which occasionally occur among British folks on these message boards. While Americans may dupe themselves on the aspirational nature of our society, I think there are opportunities that other cultures don't seem to share.

First you are arguing there is systematic racism in the US and now you’re saying the US offers more opportunity than other cultures. A few months ago I read ‘ The Unwinding of America’ I can assure you what’s described there is not happening in many other countries. The land of opportunities is a mythical notion that died halfway through the 1960’s

I'm totally lost with all this talk of prams and cakes. I'm expecting MacArthur's Park to get quoted at any minute.

I'll say it again - discussion of race between Brit and American citizens never ends well. It's THE trickiest of all subjects. Even more so than Stevie Wonder.

Every kid in America, or used to be, was told they could become President of the United States and now that includes women. Except for the Bushes and Kennedy, almost every President since Truman comes from working class or lower middle class backgrounds. Clinton and Obama both came from single-parent households.

well, they TELL kids they can. HRC came pretty close and Warren never gets tired of stooping down and telling them that running for Prez is what girls do. I really wish we'd get this one behind us but I'm afraid the first female president of the u.s. will most likely be a white, Anti-Abortion, Pro-Christian, gun owning business leader with sweat shops in foreign lands.
