Freddie's "superficiality"? What do you mean exactly. I thought it was well documented that he was bombastic in life as he was on stage. He think he was acting? He had nothing to say. About anything. So? Bono's superficial in this regard, talks alot but does fuck all. Just because freddie didn't talk about politics/social issues doesn't make him a superficial rock star. It's not a prerequisite to become a roxk star anyway.

I'm no fan but you're wrong about Bono, he's been very active in matters that have done a very great deal of good but haven't necessarily made the papers. Just because freddie didn't talk about politics/social issues doesn't make him a superficial rock star. There's no need for rock and pop stars to be political/social - in fact it's usually better when they're not. But they (*Queen but Mercury in particular*) don't/didn't live anywhere near up to their self-proclaimed greatness.

The second statement is opinion, i think they did.

Bono did a lot for this behind the scenes for just one example (there are many more) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jubilee_2000Let me rephrase this ... I think they should spare us the pomp and empty bollocks if all they are is so very superficial.

It's weird, I don't like it when rock stars get that political - although punk did it well.
Reggae and hip hop do it well, R%B can do it well, and sometimes C&W.
But rock and C&W seem to need to have to hide their political views in fables, analogies and metaphor to come off well.

I'm talking about expression, not being a politician.

No he isn't. When I talk of him having nothing to say, I'm not complaining because he hasn't written a political song about Northern Ireland. I'm talking about the capacity to produce something which has a genuine expressive weight and depth to it.

I think you're barking up the wrong tree.

I think you're barking up the wrong tree. Or hitting the nail on the head! There's an emotional emptiness to much of Queen's music which means it's not very moving.

Well I'd argue that being openly gay in the UK in the 1980s was political enough, he didn't have to write songs about Thatcher's govt, he was openly 'immoral' anyway.
But aside from that I think G's initial point was missed there and I agree with him.
