I know! Probably why I'm procrastinating about digging in.

A hero. I'm sure I remember listening to him singing self-accompanied songs and rambling on in 15-minute late-night programmes in the early 1960s. Broadcast very late on a school night, so it was often a matter of propping a transistor radio on the pillow while trying not to sleep. The hypnagogic state only added to the hallucinatory weirdness. He's up there with Viv Stanshall – or at least not very far behind – as far as I'm concerned. Did you see that doco on Sky Arts about him, the one with K T Tunstall fronting it?

I haven't seen it, no - I think I was put off by the fact that it's KT Tunstall. Which I know isn't fair...
BBC Four did a decent doc a few years ago (actually it might be 20 years ago now) - I thought even more highly of him after seeing it. I should listen to some of the earlier recorded stuff (I always assumed he put out most of his records in the 70s, probably 'cos the Virgin stuff has always been easier to get hold of). I guess the Beatles must have been fans otherwise he wouldn't have appeared in MMT.
Gideon Coe just played the Peel Session version of 'Rubber Toy', by the way, and that's what prompted me to post that. I hadn't heard it before but I was convulsed with laughter in my kitchen. He's such a treasure.

I only really know him from his little spiel at the end of Wyatt's "Little Red Riding Hood Hit The Road", which I think is fantastic. I don't know if I could take a whole album's worth in one sitting, but I definitely need to check out more.

Was there a thread on here featuring songs about records, or was that a FB thing? I can’t remember, but here’s one to add to the list...
