All the talk of the Southern Death Cult's "Fatman" put me in mind of this tune, which is far superior to anything the SDC or The Cult ever did:

Curtis resplendent in a two-piece tea towel there.

That Little ones would know / Or believe me if I told them so couplet is kind of magical. Like a lot else about the song, it maybe shouldn't work yet it does; I'm not sure that anyone less than Curtis Mayfield could have pulled this off.

I heard this 1968 track on a various artists comp today, and it was driving me crazy - I was sure I knew another song with a very similar melody/changes, but I couldn't think what it was... Eventually I figured it out. Can you? It's a song a lot of people here would know.

No, much closer than that (though I do see a slight resemblance there).
This one is from the early '70s, by a black American artist...

No quiz this time, but here's another song from the same comp, by one J.A. Freedman -
- and similarly I thought "where have I heard that intro before?" It's pretty much the same chords as the intro to Bettye Swann's soul version of Merle Haggard's "Today I Started Loving You Again", released earlier the same year (1969) - though I'm more familiar with her unreleased-at-the-time (early '70s) duet with Buck Owens, where the resemblance is even clearer -

That really is a lovely song, and lovely sung, but that SO-turn-of-the-seventies "aren't we funky now" rhythm section is tripping it up a bit.

oh Charlie I LOVE it! I can't believe it! it's the best thing I've heard in an age. She was married to Chris Barber, apparently, and was a jazz singer, really - had successes in the 50s and 60s. The album this came from is one of those 'buried treasures', but the track also made this comp wow just when I think nothing much can move me any more...

You know, I downloaded that whole series not long ago - never got around to actually listening to any of it...
