The Calvert thing is like good Hawkwind - a Chinese meal with all the chicken heads, octo eyes and cow arses taken out, in other words. Nice and skronky, as I believe David Niven was fond of shouting
The other thing is kind of interesting but it's not massaging my cartilages really (as Gloria Gaynor used to say after her shows)

A is really good. I'm not a huge Hawkwind fan all told, but sometimes when they meander less they're pretty intense, in a early BOC/Sabs kind of way. Except more sharp and less sludgy. Everything I've heard from this album so far has piqued my interest at least a little.
But B, wow! It earns its entire 10 minutes, which is rare. A lot happening in there, but it all sounds unlabored. Really great discovery. Must hear more.

A is pretty good and sort of pre-dates brit punk. it doesn't out stay its welcome either. maybe a bit one dimensional.
my heart sunk when i saw another track in excess of 10 minutes, which have been a blight on this year's cup. but LIKE DAVE says B rewards the listener's perseverance and reminds me a bit of syd era floyd and satanic majesties stones.

Yeah, the "Interstellar Overdrive" influence was not lost on me. Meant to mention that.

B is kinda ok, but more than its length, arguably justified, is the out of tune singing what makes me go against it. Plus I did love the energy of A.

The Calvert really is an invigorating burst of rock n' roll 'tude with a spacey groove. It's been picked before of course, but, for me, seems to improve with each listen. I much prefer it to most Hawkwind. B is intriguing. I did like its ghostly, disembodied strings and stoned percussion. The problem is there's not much of a song there so it gets monotonous quite quickly. Would be interested in hearing the album though, maybe this is the wrong track to pick from it?

I must check out the solo Hawkwind careers more closely, coz A seems to be a gem i have missed for too long. I like B's sound a lot, very of its time in a good way, but love A's bounce.

Huge Hawkwind fan - so this is an absolute no brainer for me. The best track on the album too.

Bloody hell, how did C get to the preludin cup final, and provide two tracks in the same round? I never actually bought any of the Calvert stuff, though I love the first few years of Hawkwind as much as anyone. Anyone that doesn't actually dig out the records that often, but like the idea in principle. This is them rocking out, and it's strange how they manage to make this stuff acecptable to me, there's almost a Stooges edge to the riffing, but with a density of sound that's all Hawkwind. For going back to the 70s and picking a lumpy old rock track, this is a pretty good effort.
B's the deeper pick, but it's also got a really boring intro. Those occasional ascending string plucks are the only real energy in the song. The last 5 minutes are entirely pointless, too. Bonus points for digging deeper, but if this was recorded in Finland in 2020, you'd all be slagging it off (and I'd be saying it's a masterpiece).

B goes nowhere and takes 10 1/2 minutes to get there. A is a surprisingly good, pre-punk R&R track. Puts me in mind of something like Police Car by Larry Wallis or one of those other early Stiff singles by older pre-punk guys. And it’s not a far cry from my favorite Hawkwind track - Urban Guerrilla.

I liked A and thought it was a pretty decent blast of space rock.
B was not my thing and just went on and on.

Neither is really my thing, But A is energetic and to-the-point, which is enough here.
