I take it you are all aware of the band squid? Rave reviews and praise abounds. On first listen it is most new and you can hear similarities with countless acts. And yet... The more I play it the better it sounds. It does take a few plays though. The way songs like narrator play out is very good indeed. Have a little dip in the water and see if you like it.

It is a little long but stick with it. It sounds better every time I hear it.

That's actually pretty good, I like the way it builds to a proper climax. I'm a sucker for stuff harking back to the post punk era, but it's not completely retro, it's building on its influences. I might well check more stuff out. Got to get to grips with the new Sons of Kemet album first though.

I didn't think they had it in them.

There's no song there at all. Struggling to see the point of this.

Do you always need a melody, G?

Do you always need a melody, G? No, not always. Sometimes a good groove will do or some textured atmosphere. But one thing a melody can do is give form and direction to a track. This track has a sound (basically a Beefheart pastiche, with a bit of Talking Heads thrown in) but nothing to hang it on so it doesn't go anywhere.

Sorry but I found it grating, unpleasant and a bit silly.

They took 8+ minutes what they could have done in four. I listened just to hear what G and Dougie disliked so much.
Pretty much what G wrote, but I like it a little better than that. I could sense a musical theme running through.
And through and through and through. . .

I didn't strongly dislike it, it's more that there was nothing really there to make me want to continue. It reminded me of Stump or someone like that, but with more muso overtones. But I better leave it there lest I inspire another J tongue lashing!

I didn't mind it at all. The vocals are the worst thing about it. Music like this needs the right kind of vocalist. You really don't find them very often, unfortunately. Bands just take on the person with the most confidence, the one who can stand behind a mike and yell and be 'confrontational'. But of course it takes much more than that.
It gets easier to digest when the Talking Heads bit starts up about halfway through and the frontcunt dials it all down a bit. When the screaming started about seven minutes in, I gave up. I mean...you know, as we always say, what's the point? why bother with it? when you've got the far superior More Songs About Buildings and Food, or whatever? Life's too short.

It's ok G it really is. The reason I posted that track was because it starts as one thing and slowly becomes another. It does and they do borrow heavily from a well trodden path. The interest comes from the fact that they add something else to the mix and see what sticks. They are kind of like Heston Blumenthal in the kitchen . It is a step too far for some. It may taste better than it sounds or even worse. It depends on the palate. It disappoints me in the same way that people won't eat foreign food on holiday and they visit Lidl an hour after getting off of the plane because they know what they like.

So often these days you hear some band or watch some movie that has been getting rave reviews and you think, are these fuckers high? You can’t trust reviews at all these days

I was the worst musician and someone needed to sing. I didn't like the spotlight, but I was the only volunteer. As I did it, there were much better singers than me, but I was the only one who didn't mind doing it consistently. I always felt like a farce. We'd set up a second mic and I always told the guys to use it, but they never did.
