Ok Preludin, what say you about the Monkees' 4th album, from late '67?

I say it's their most all-'round satisfying.
I like it so much, in fact, that I'm having trouble narrowing my choices down to 6.

Is this one real, or another parody?

'Daily Nightly', 'What Am I Doing Hangin Around' and 'Pleasant Valley Sunday' are all wonderful - went for those three without hesitation. Really like 'Cuddly Toy' and 'The Door Into Summer' too.
The opening two tracks are weak, and half of the others ('Don't Call On Me'? 'Hard To Believe'?) I can't even recall.

Is this one real, or another parody? Says the man whose music collection is at least 40% made up of groups only their mothers have heard of.

Yep, you nailed the 3 of the 4 i picked first off; the other instant pick was 'Love Is Only Sleeping', a gem. 'The Door Into Summer' is also great. Musically i could easily have picked 'Star Collector' but over the years the lyrics have not aged well for me (same with 'She Hangs Out').

For the one or two who haven't seen it yet - surely one of the coolest 60s promos:
Dolenz all over the Moog like it was going to be pulled away any second. Jones and Tork showing moderate enthusiasm. And Nez sitting stock-still in shades throughout.
Fucking A.

Imagine if they'd only released one album in 1967, 1968 and 1969. Those albums would stand up to the VU, the Kinks, the Byrds and the Stones.
Maybe I'll get around to compiling them one of these days.

crazy talk. the Monkees did some great tracks and were a great TV show. any attempt to re-fashion them as making really good records will find a resistance of at least one - me. yeah, you can listen to that one front to back without tearing it off and hurling it across the room. is this really the stuff of legend? apparently so. one argument that I've seen around ever since I've been yammering on the internet is this wacky fucking idea that the Monkees as recording artists are in anywhere NEAR the same orbits as those other acts. I've given the matter a lot of thought. Here is my considered counter argument... Nope. not even close IMO.

I was selling them short.
Those albums would actually be BETTER than the Byrds' weedy, pretentious efforts for one thing. And the 1968 collection would be much more listenable than the hokey ol' Buggers Banquet
