the thing I remember most was his silly afro perm hairstyle. Its funny how you remember little insignificant things from gigs past. I do that too. Thats early Cream, were they jamming then or was it more of a song set? I can't remember much detail - I always had a stronger visual memory than an auditory one - but I'm pretty sure it was a mix of the two. There was no Wrapping Paper but I'm pretty certain they did I Feel Free, and they stretched out on I'm So Glad, Toad, maybe Rollin and Tumbling and certainly Spoonful. They may have done some Disraeli Gears things, too, but it hadn't been released yet and I wouldn't have recognized them. I only really knew I Feel Free that well: the two school friends I went with were bigger fans - Keith was big time into country blues, had albums by Son House, Robert Johnson and Skip James, while Clive was into the poppier English stuff and the beat boom bands, while I was big on US pop and soul, but we all found something we liked at the gig. And I was standing about ten feet from Clapton, who was at my side of the stage, and because I'm tall, and stage was so low, I was looking more or less straight at him, which is why I remember the hair.

It looked boss on the front cover of DG, anyway.

he got the dreaded perm in late 66 just before meeting hendrix for the first time. in fact, the guy on the left over hendrix's shoulder looks remarkably like a young ray:

I never read the words he spoke in 1976 until this week. The statement he made recently to the Guardian about discrimination prompted some people to repost his concert rant. Its really putrid.
