Hi, I haven't been here for a long time, but I must have been called subconsciously by the Who mention.
I think as the seventies wore on, their singles weren't as good, even though the albums still held water. The Who By Numbers is the best example, where the overall album is pretty great EXCEPT for the single, "Squeeze Box". Who Are You, Face Dances, and It's Hard are all very strange albums—going in a more generic direction while also becoming almost prog-like in their complexity. It's all sort of interesting, but you don't get much of that just listening to things like "Athena".
Their last great single (sorry sneelock) for me would be 1974's "Long Live Rock". The last utterly fantastic ones were "Relay" and "Join Together".
For some reason, it's hard to cite the Quadrophenia tracks which came out as singles. I guess "5:15" "Love Reign O'er Me" and "The Real Me" were singles, but it's like saying what's your favorite two minutes of an opera. They're great in the whole, but a bit uninteresting by themselves. It seems that the best singles feel like a complete statement in some way.
