a That slack rubber band riff was what sold this song, I thought. I wasn't overly impressed with it at the time - G's 'youth club stomp' crack was about right. I haven't heard this in a while, and have to say I was distinctly underwhelmed. It's dated very badly.
The intro left me full of foreboding, and to be honest the arrangement throught was way too busy - could have sworn I heard a French horn in there somewhere. But, and it's a big but (oo-er missus) to my way of thinking, that is a proper soul voice and one of the best vocals I've heard in a long time.

quite sad to see 'baby come back' getting such bad feedback. Particularly when the criticisms are based on the fact that it's 'obvious', it's something you can dance stupidly to, etc. etc. We've really dug a hole for ourselves with these damned cups and sadly there's no way out.

I'm happy with my hole, thank you very much. "Obvious" isn't a criticism of the song, just of the pick. And it surely isn't a song beyond criticism?

Addendum dedicated to G Ballad: yes Strings: yes Lyrics about love: yes Cheesy: NO See? This!
I like A, but it was a HUUUGE hit hereabouts.
B, on the other hand, is new to me and I simply adore the switches between major and minor.

It's fine. I don't know what some of you want. For there to be total agreement on what's good?

Honestly the idea that it would be a better competition if people only stuck to the familiar and easily recognisable is a complete fallacy in my view. It would just become like the many threads we get in music where we choose our favourite from some selected classics or hits. One of the most refreshing things about the cup is we are being confronted with stuff we'd normally never discuss. I don't get the intolerance towards that.

i find your lecturing a bit of a turn-off sometimes, G.
why can't you just let us enjoy 'baby come back' without over analysing it?
