i find your lecturing a bit of a turn-off sometimes, G. why can't you just let us enjoy 'baby come back' without over analysing it? Why can't you accept diversity of opinion without feeling the need to pull people up for not agreeing with you? because i have a duty to. i can never desert my post!

Honestly the idea that it would be a better competition if people only stuck to the familiar and easily recognisable is a complete fallacy in my view. I'm not saying that. But we're getting some seriously negative commentary (and I know I'm as bad as anyone) about many of the choices and it's bothering some people. Furthermore I don't think we're discovering a lot of new stuff either. I don't know what the solution is, but choosing absolute obscurities or personal choices that mean very little to others (tell me this isn't true if you like!) and putting them up in a competition such as this one makes almost no sense to me. Sorry.

can i just take this opportunity to say that some of your comments have been as hurtful as hell, even when hiding under other poster's negativity.

Sorry. Of course it makes sense..it's fun to be confronted with the unfamiliar and unpredictable. Comments haven't been any more negative than previous years. It's natural to get a bit aggrieved if you think your track is getting an unfair hearing, but just remember there will be people who will have felt that about some of your comments, or indeed some of mine. Relax, another round will come along when what you pick will get lots of praise!

Don't let these things get to you. Honestly we could all take a leaf out of Darkness Fish and Fonz's book. Their picks get routinely dissed but they accept it with good humour.

It's like Russia putting forward old fellas for the Olympics, saying 'well they've seen how well we do with Alexander Ovechkin and all the other top athletes, let's see how they react to these deadbeats!'

Sorry. In the past the cup was a game. Yes you expressed your own taste but you also played the game and for some people that's where the fun/challenge was. Now that's gone and it's basically people picking their own thing and because we have such disparate groups with different aesthetics there is no collective aesthetic that we can all tap into and play the game.

I agree completely.
But like I say, I don't know how else we could do this.
We tried a comedy cup and it wasn't a huge success. But maybe we could try something else - an art cup, even?

The 'competition' aspect of the cup has been secondary for a long time in what people enjoy about the cup. That's what you fail to understand. Obviously to do well is a nice bonus, but I don't think it's the 'point' of why most people enter. It's more interesting as a competition because it gives a structure and narrative to things that you wouldn't get in a normal thread, but no one really cares who wins.
