it's Elton John, isn't it? absolutely the same kind of piano-led fancy show tune.

A great song.
The refrain is genius and the way it collapses at the end with sax is brilliant.

As with most of Bowie things, I would credit the musical collaborator, in this case, Ronson. David was too busy with wardrobe probably.

Exactly, one of the reasons Ronson moved on, "watch that guy, he'll take your stuff". David wasn't a good enough player or musically knowledgeable enough. Every subsequent collaborator was smart enough to demand credit.

Believe your own constructed fictions if you want, there's no point in arguing with you.

David wasn't a good enough player or musically knowledgeable enough. Rick Wakeman recalled visiting Bowie to learn the songs, according to him they were complete. He said it was one of the best collection of songs he'd heard in a single day. That was pre-studio, is your claim that Ronson co-wrote the song before they went into the studio? Its a gem of course - you might not know but it was recorded with the same piano as used on many Elton songs such as Your Song.

But my point is that you would know, because it sounds like an Elton John song from the same time. Melodically, the arrangement, the production, the vocal. 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' is right next door. And Elton John is (mostly) disliked, whereas Bowie is adored. I wonder how people manage to square the two. If they bother.

Elton John is not disliked on here or BCB, we've had many threads praising his early seventies work. Secondly,I don't think Changes does sound like Elton John particularly. The verses are quite jazzy, with the way the notes tumble into each other, you can imagine a crooner type like Tony Bennet singing it. Not very Elton John like. Now if you'd said Fill Your Heart or Song for Bob Dylan were like Elton John, I wouldn't have disagreed.

I agree with G - I don't see the Elton John comparison, bar perhaps the sonics (as different from song/arrangement/etc.).
I've always dug it.

If there was a venn diagram of Elton and Bowie you might put 'Changes' or 'Star' in the middle but we're talking two very different artists here, apart from these fleeting similarities. Having said that, the canonization of Bowie since he died is really getting overdone. He's like Che Guevara now, shorthand for credibility. I wouldn't dare wear a Bowie t-shirt now in case I was mistaken for a H&M fad hopper!

there's a "behind the music" type thing about making Transformer where Lou Reed says very nice things about Bowie. Hardcore Lou Fans will need a moment for that to sink in. Lou Reed said something nice about somebody. they are playing the background vocals of "Satellite of Love" and Lou says something like "that was Bowies idea - isn't that great?"
well, wasn't it? I get the "Bowie laid around" thing. Tony Visconti said he and Ronson worked very hard on Man who sold the world while Bowie sort of lounged around. that's the thing - some people work very hard for their talents and some are more than a little bit gifted.
Bowie had a sensibility. He could rip somebody off - straight up and it would sound like Bowie. He could use a brilliant arrangement written by somebody else and make a phrase or vocal trick the thing you remember about the track.
I wish he was overrated here. I saw more Bowie regalia about two years before he died than I've seen since.
