He did seem to be at odds in terms of rhythm to the rest of them. When they were all hip and cool in the 60's, Charlie was the ugliest.
When they all started aging quite badly, Charlie looked quite clearly the coolest.
When all of them were on smack, Charlie was free, and then vice versa.
In all honesty I never thought of him as a particularly unique drummer, but his style was "rolling".

Sad news. The most unpretentious, dapper, unassuming and all-round likable of the Stones.

"dapper" - that's the word I was looking for. I found his wardrobe choices often as snappy as his drumming.

Some dude on the news saying the Stones tried out Mick Avory before Charlie - hadn't heard that before.

People always say 'he was the right (drummer/singer/bassist) for that band' - but in this case I really do think that was the case.
Anyway it's unimaginable to hear those records without his beat now.
I always found it interesting how he used a lot of rolls from around 65 to 68, then seemed to drop them altogether.

Sky Arts is showing the stones rock and/or roll circus in his memory. Interesting line up.

RIP
They will have to be careful at the gravesite so that Keith doesn't fall in pulling Mick and Ron with him.

Could make room for Mick Taylor to rejoin. I'm sure he could use the cash.

SO what do you reckon? should they pack it all in now?
And if they knew how ill he was, wasn't it a bit mercenary to go ahead with the tour?

In that space and time when they came together, was there a better drummer around? Thinking of all those beginning beat groups, I can't think there was. The only one that comes reasonably close would be Jim McCarty that might have fit in.
