You have to consider the speed at which celebrity travels nowadays. It's pretty much instantaneous. All you have to do is do something to bring attention to yourself. When it was print quotes or even quick TV interviews, you did have to work harder to get people's attention and to keep it.
Maybe there is an old style raconteur like Niven (or Orson Welles) out there now, but how would we know? They'd be doing the 'ice challenge' on Tik Tok.

The big Tik Tok challenge at the moment is filming oneself destroying your school's bathroom. I mean destroying: toilet bowls, sinks, mirrors, dispensers, etc., Obviously schools are not pleased, but they can usually find the evidence on Tik Tok, Instagram, etc.,

They've been doing this in my kids' school ---they've been stealing soap dispensers, but not wrecking the place -- they need somewhere to vape.

I don't think it's really out of touch of anyone to lament the fact that it didn't used to be so common that people were famous for being famous. You used to have to do something to earn that.
Am I really just an old man shaking my fist at the cloud? Surely we all recognize some truth in this, no?

I remember grown-ups saying the same sort of thing about Tiny Tim. I'll grant you that Tiny Tim is Mozart compared to some of this but I think it's a function of age that we think they don't deserve the things they have that we didn't have. Because they don't!
