I just got the appraisal on my current property because I'm refinancing the loan. When I first bought the house, I hadn't been at my job five years. Now, I am and it helps in lowering interest rates - and interest rates are low anyway. Even though it's Eugene, OR, I've owned the place two years and the current appraisal came out $50,000 more than when I bought it. $25,000 a year on a two-year investment is pretty good, I think.

Accepted an offer on my Dad's house today. 5K over asking price - in these times I'm happy with it.

Hardly - it's split between three of us.
Enough to put away to invest with though, which given the stock market right now, could be advantageous.
We've got to spend a fair amount to bring the house we're in up to scratch - probably about £15K alone on tarting the place up and getting a new bathroom.

So I've had a blimey load of paper arrive in the post today - the top sheet was from the solicitors saying 'we're ready to proceed'.
I've looked through all the documents and need to look through them again and work out what's important and what isn't. I'll call her up on Monday with a few questions. If all seems well then I'll transfer the money and I guess I'll be able to move in within a few days.
I'll probably stay here for a month or two anyway because I need the internet for work. Next week I start with the Chinese studes. Everything seems to have happened at once after a very lazy few months!

The English love their wallpaper.

I'll be buying a house in the next 6 or so months, first thing i found out is, i really don't know how mortgages really work. Also, the thought of keeping a 3 bedroom house tidy on a constant basis, is as appealing as going for a prostrate exam.

Next week I start with the Chinese studes. Everything seems to have happened at once after a very lazy few months! sooooo... - 'taught' these students for the first time today - just six of them. Strange experience, really. They didn't say anything, they didn't even type much, and I couldn't see them. Over in two hours. I was sick of the sound of my own voice. Whatever. Heriot-Watt are paying us well so I can't really complain - but there is NO satisfaction in this type of work at all - called the solicitor and asked a few questions about the flat and the paperwork. You can never rely on people doing what they're supposed to do, right? so she wasn't enormously helpful. Non-committal, expecting me to go to her, she didn't come to me. But in the end most things were clarified. So I sent back signed contracts and will transfer the money tomorrow. As it's so much cash, I think I need to visit the bank personally with some ID to sort it out Looks like I'll be moving in in about a week. Fuck knows how I'm going to get everything down there. I don't trust these 'van man' fuckers - they turn up late, throw everything in the back of the van and don't hang about after unloading once you get to your destination. I'll work something out.

I'm a bit confused, are removalists meant to hang around after they cart your shit inside? Or do these van blokes just dump it on the footpath and leave you to get it inside yourself or something?

They tend to just dump it all on the street and fuck off sharpish. Since corona, they don't usually go inside the property. If you're on your own it's impossible.

Lord, you're as negative as my sister!
I'm doing ALL the work for the admin and negotiations, and my sister chimes in yesterday with "well, they could do x and y". She's never been involved in a negotiation in her life.
