Sign up to start a thread next week! I don't join in with the hive collective projects as a rule Johnny. My integrity is all I have left.

I may have said it before, but this track really does strike me as a precursor to Forever Changes - the sort of minor chord movement, the parping brass, the rolling acoustic 12 string. I know Diamond was a Love fan, but...far more remarkable is the fact that this came first.

I heard the Cash version first (lord forgive me for thinking that alt-country was viable, I blame Uncut). There’s still the patina of squareJohn clinging to Diamond, he struggles to poke through it like Glen Campbell did.

…and Billy Joel’s pugnacious Bronx-ism let him hack out a good half dozen or more extremely serviceable records. Motherfuckin’ Allentown man.

Motherfuckin’ Allentown man. He even got that wrong, nearby Bethlehem had the steel works. It did put him in the running for the Springsteen Sweepstakes. (Something Mr. Diamond couldn't even muster to do, he was busy sending flowers.)

I know Diamond was a Love fan He tried to hire Michael Stuart Ware (source: MSW's book) in the early 70s on the basis of the Love records.

I read the book, but had forgotten that!
Another strange confluence: the early Mothers Of Invention backed Neil for a few 1966 gigs (source: Jimmy Carl Black's book). Jim said he was lovely to work with, and they would occasionally run into him on the road after that and be happy to see each other again.

It’s fun to sing “Don’t Give Up On Us” in a Neil Diamond voice. Try it!
