Embajadores. But I spent most of the working day travelling around the city teaching in different places.
I liked it in parts - Lavapies, Malasaña - but the locals drove me up the wazoo.
Barcelona is more multi-culti, more vibrant as a consequence. Being on the coast is nearly always beneficial for a city.

I liked the way Madrid had particular districts with their own character. That always adds depth and mystery to a city.

Yes but that's true of every big city.

Yes but that's true of every big city. more so in the case of madrid than, say, paris.

A proper facking city innit. it's lost its appeal. the last time i visited, the destruction and gentrification made me want to cry. Seems true. I don't know why, but I went on to Google Maps, street view, and looked around some of my old haunts. Everything that was kinda tawdry is now very upscale. Like plastic surgery on an aging starlet.

please DO give details if they're not too incriminating.

please DO give details if they're not too incriminating. I lived off the Gloucester Rd so hung out around there and Earl's Court. I had an English girlfriend who lived in East Finchley and it took forever to get there by Tube from the Gloucester Rd. tube station. I had lots of one night stands. My roommate had an English girlfriend who brought over a friend one time. They were in the living room watching TV with me and I barely talked to her friend. We were drinking and smoking pot and at one point in the night, I took the friend's hand without saying a word and went straight to the bedroom and we had sex at least three or four times (I was young). My dick felt like it was going to fall off the next morning from all the fucking and blow jobs. When I up, she and her friend were gone. I wish all relationships were that easy.

London was HEAVING yesterday. I don't think I've seen it as busy as that before. I believe that during the week it's quieter, but speaking to two people in shops yesterday, both of them said that the weekends were, by contrast, approaching insane levels of people about, particularly in Covent Garden.

At their worst, all of those.
I encountered the pride thing everywhere, it wasn't just an impression gleaned from occasional meetings. Everybody said 'we have the best (whatever) here in Spain'. I thought it was a joke at first! but no. That really fucked me off after a while.
And the noise is just strange, the way people converse, the way they behaved on the Metro, unreasonably loud! Kids HOWLING, indulged by parents, nobody bothers.
But....some of the friendliest people I've met, for sure, and entertaining, gregarious company often.
