You all overthink things, with Dexys it's all about feelings.

How is some shit singer with a cartoon voice really any better than other commercial dross like Journey that actually has a good singer? Some how commercial dross from a smaller market has to be accorded more respect than commercial dross from a larger market?
ABC, Human League, New Order, etc., were looking to score hits and make money, really no different than Journey, Tom Petty, Cars, etc., just different markets.

Open your heart. This isn't about demographics, territories, sales graphs, comparisons to Journey...
It's just about great tunes conveying real truths and passions played with feeling. It's absolutely pure.

It's all pure. Open your heart also, cause as soon as I start posting on Journey and the like somehow that generosity does not come through, one country's commercial dross is equal to another country's. It's about parity.

It's about parity. As someone without a horse in this race, surely you'd have to accept that Dexy's were creating their own distinctive sound, and reinvented that sound on a couple of occasions. Journey just didn't have that kind of invention about them.

It is interesting, and you're right to single them out as being the most divisive G, because I don't think a single American here can even TOLERATE them! whereas for quite a few of us Brits they were heroic

It does appear more narrow the taste, more likely to think their tastes are gold.

So is Dexy's just another UK/US divide? We have a few of them. Human League, for example.
Might get a faster read on it by asking: do any Brits dislike them? Do any Americans love them?
Surely there must be one or two.
But I wonder - if it breaks down so purely by demographics - and probably there's others, like male vs. female, or age - does that count?
I don't hate Dexy's so much as a) I'm bewildered by the all-encompassing love, which might have something to do with the fact that b) they're almost exclusively known for "C'mon Eileen" here, which...to put it charitably...

It does appear more narrow the taste, more likely to think their tastes are gold. You think? It's the delusion he holds most dear. He loves to cast himself as the wise oracle appreciating the history and source of all music, whilst continually stereotyping the tastes of others in the most negative terms he can think of. It's become obsessional and he spends far more time talking about the tastes of others than he does his own musical passions. That's the marvellous irony in all this.
