There's something quite elemental about this that I really like. They, were, what, 21 or 22, and had, quite clearly, achieved or created a sort of echoey yet primal sound world that was theirs alone. At the same time, there's something about it that I can't fully embrace as being great. Maybe it's Bono's haircut, maybe it's that it has that feeling of being the sort of gig that might be created in a Stranger Things episode (it was after all 1983), maybe it's not just classic enough to be quantified as a thing, I dont' know.
However, I do know that the whole thing has a great energy that cannot be dimmed in any way. They look like they're at the top of their game without knowing that they are, a bit like say, the Beatles at Shea Stadium or whatever. Before the ego, the (even sillier) costumes and the self-conscious shite (Rattle & Hum) take over.

It's properly powerful, pretty damned original, INSPIRING even. But yeah, there's always something there that makes you want to pinch your nose.

It's while they were still wrestling with Christianity and Irish/Republicanism, I guess the tensions created some good stuff, as the album has lot s of good moments.

Even back then, Edge looked like a priest on holiday. The sounds he was making! it doesn't seem to fit

He took a lot from other guitarists of the time of course. It is quite anthemic and stirring, but also a bit clumsy and obvious. Can't say I'm a fan (and wasn't at the time, although I knew plenty that were), but I do get the appeal.

Which most owe to the arrival of and affordability of the Electro Harmonix Memory Man delay unit, (MXR) chorus/flange/phasing pedals, and Roland Jazz Chorus amp(known for its non-distort-ability as it was originally a keyboard amp): Ashton, Levene, McGeoch, Edge, Sergeant, etc.,

yeah, that is a weird throwaway that with some tweaking could have been much better, but it does seem to serve some audience function. I thought it was a dud when they played it at the time, but it did give Bono a chance to climb into the rigging for a dramatic set up of the next song.

I get that the bass solo is terrible, but he does a pretty good job there otherwise. I think it's the perfunctory drumming and the over-the-top vocal performance that ruin it for me. The rhythm section just don't appear connected, and in post-punk the drums always had to be top-notch.

It's magnificent, transcendent even.
It's a wonderful gig and it's even more wonderful because after a nervous start you can see the magic unfolding before your eyes. That moment when a band starts to fly, everything comes together...and the crowd senses it too. There's a real synchronicity there and by the time we get to Gloria there are sparks and magic in the air. Of course being U2 the usual dolts will nit-pick and add some caveat to remove themselves a little from fully embracing something they consider a bit too uncool but for those unburdened by such repressive nonsense it's a joyous, emotional, punch-the-air moment. Look at at the fucking crowd! Look at fucking Bono! 23 odd years old, fucking mullet and silly boots but completely owning the stage and acting like the King of the bleeding World. I bet Ian McCulloch watches this whilst he's pissed on his own on a Thursday night in some smelly living room and silently weeps. Young men on the cusp. Nice one lads. Believe.

I really liked boy when it came out. The follow up October was woeful. They went all hero rock and silly for a long time.

Their second album's my favorite. Really ? Yep. I really liked U2 and saw them on the War tour. I thought they'd be a band where I'd buy every one of their albums. And then The Unforgettable Fire and Joshua Tree came out and I didn't like them very much anymore. liked Achtung Baby, but that's the last one I bought and listened to.
