The missus has never seen them in real life, and it's one of the things she most wants to see. I've been fortunate enough to see them a few times in the early 90's even as relatively far south as I live - never as intensely as in those pics, but still genuinely awe inspiring. Maybe there was more solar activity back then - who knows. I'm surprised we've never seen them on any of our trips up to northern Ontario, but then again we hardly step foot outside after dark up there. If the cold doesn't get you, the mosquitoes will depending on the time of year.

Those photos are stunning.
There is a big difference between what the camera can record and the human eye though. I went on a northern lights trip in Iceland and saw a disappointing green smudge. On the bus back, however, I could see some pics someone had taken on their camera as they flicked through 'em and their photos showed a bright fluorescent green wave nothing at all like what I'd witnessed a few minutes earlier.

The missus has something of an obsession about the northern lights, gets all the alerts on her phone whenever the lights are supposedly visible in the north of England. But she only found out recently that all the pics from around here are basically enhanced camera phone pics, at best you're going to see some kind of lightness in the sky with the naked eye.

They're wonderful. I saw some back in the 80's when I would venture out to the countryside more than I do now (I never do, now!). In the city, the smog and light pollution kill.
I was especially interestd in astronomy back then, a bit less so now I guess. I rememer being totally awed the first time I REALLY saw the Milky Way up there in full regalia. Absolutely nothing compared to the faint smudge we see in the city.
And then of course, there was this 36 or so years ago:

I camped with a youth group by the River Derwent in north Durham as a kid to see it but can only remember it being quite fuzzy and vague. I'd love to see them somewhere with a clearer view.

I saw them in Scotland when I was a lad. They were like a giant shimmering green curtain, reaching up and up. I remember thinking I’d never realized how high the sky was!
