Where do you stand on this? I think it was a lame joke for sure but Will Smith made an absolute fool of himself.

You do wonder what Gervais would have done. The real problem for me was the lack of diversity in the combatants, two black guys ? When will Hollywood learn,tsk.

She has alopecia so I can understand why she might not appreciate the joke and why Smith might be pissed off but it's a joke you know.
It would have been funnier if he had a white glove that he slapped him with dandy style. "How dare you, Sir!". I have to say Chris Rock handled it pretty well. I mean if some cunt had just slapped me in front of a couple million people I'd find it hard not to slap him back.
It'll be interesting to see the reactions. Is this the dreaded bogeyman of "toxic masculinity" or some act of chivalrous defence?
At least it gets people talking because, let's face it, nobody gives a shit about the oscars anymore.

Is this the dreaded bogeyman of " toxic masculinity" I've seen toxic masculinity quoted an awful lot on twitter today. I've also seen a lot of "did he not think to stop and ask his wife if this was how she would want to be defended". I mean, surely he has the right to be offended if someone insults his wife, without consulting her. But in the end, can we not just accept that both sides were wrong. Will Smith for resorting to violence, and The Academy for thinking he deserves a best actor award. |

Is there any situation where they cannot rationalise a mans behaviour through some weird feminist lens? The thing is, you can say it's an overreaction but, truthfully, part of me also understands it. Someone takes the piss out of your wife in front of millions and you want to slap the fucker but it's the kind of reaction that you would expect in a pub on a Friday night rather than at the Oscars. The thing is, he was pretty calm about it, controlled you know? He laughed at the joke and maybe it was a delayed reaction (hey that's kinda funny, hey that's my fucking wife!) but part of me thinks he twigged his wife's reaction and maybe thought "I ain't getting laid for a month" and decided to slap him. Maybe I'm overthinking that. |

There are so many strange layers to this. Bald men get jokes hurled at them fairly often. It's one of the few (if not the only) 'body-shaming' insults still deemed acceptable.
The delayed violent reaction from Smith is a head-scratcher. That he was allowed to take his seat and still receive an award with a standing ovation was bizarre, followed by a fake apology with tears and speaking about being a vessel of love.
He's written about always feeling like a coward for not defending his mother from his abusive dad.
Apparently he and Jada have an open sexual relationship. She has frequently discussed their private lives on her podcast. All very strange to me. These people really live in another world.

Many levels indeed, all depressing
Pretty rarified level of Hollywood A-listers, and even more rarified black Hollywood A-listers.
Apparently they were all buds until Chris Rock's 2016 dissing of Jada's Oscars So White boycott, Rock was seen as being too vigorous in his defense of the predominantly white Academy. Rock then got into some weird comment/drama on Will Smith's friendly relationship with his (Will's) first wife and that Jada should be mad, not necessary. See what happens kids when your life rolls out in social media. And who knows all the unknown private interactions and possible slights...Much has been made about Will/Jada's open relationship usually to the detriment of Jada. It seems mostly to have been a cover story for their dating others during their separation. Apparently, the camel that broke the straw's back leading to their separation was a very over the top BD party Will gave Jada that she did not want(e.g. big empty gesture). It symbolized her how out of touch they were as couple. I'm sure this "protecting her honor showing" didn't make her happy(e.g. big empty gesture). Don't be surprised if there is a divorce.
Chris Rock has said he won't press charges, though I believe he has up to two years.
Will there be fallout for Will Smith? Will white Hollywood see him as angry black man?
Does this give pause to comedians whose approach might be seen as aggressive, insulting?
In the end, with award show ratings in decline, maybe this was all an act, acting in Hollywood?
I have to imagine this isn't the first time there has been bust ups at the Oscars: Sinatra, Mitchum, (Broderick) Crawford, Bogart, Burton, etc.,

The jokes on Twitter came fast and furious, like "Jada can smash twenty year olds and Will doesn't care, but make a bald joke and he goes off."
The joke was unworthy of Rock. It was too easy.
But Smith originally laughed and saw Jada's expression and had to uphold his manhood. He was out of line and could have handled it backstage or after. He made it about himself, which I kinda expect an arrogant, entitled douche to do.
Rock handled it well, but unlike Smith, he had to handle heckling in his early career. A slap. Bitch, please.
I got a lot of retweets with my "I guess they're not going to hold a comedy roast for Will Smith anytime soon."

He was concerned enough to release an 'apology' tweet to Rock today, which shows he has one eye on what the fallout might be, and is trying to minimize that. But all is clearly NOT right in Smithtown. Yeah, it was a poor excuse for a joke, but that was some borderline breakdown shit that he played out last night. Getting up on stage at the Oscars, to SLAP Chris Rock for a crappy joke .... Will, go get some help my man, whatever it is you need, because it's clear you do. I hope Denzel whispered THAT to him. |

Aye, something really isn't right. The emotional speech afterwards was very odd too. I dig some digging last night and there is a lot of animosity towards Jada, especially after those personal interviews where she's talking about having an affair and Will Smith is in tears. There does seem to be a consensus that the power in the relationship lies with her. People talking about "abuse" etc. Watch some of that stuff and see what you think but it doesn't create a positive impression of her let's put it that way. |
