I see we went there already - from page 7: The Vinegar Joe is a terribly generic blues rock song, but no worse than some random song off a Free or Nazareth album..there was a lot of this stuff around in the 70s! The spirited performance redeems it somewhat. It's no Karel Fialka anyway! What you call a 'spirited performance' is what, for me, takes it from the 'quite bad' into the 'absolutely fucking nightmarish' class. Elkie Brooks doing a kind of sub-Joplin 'one of the guys' thing, face scrunched up, squawking lyrics from a light-ale-soaked corner of hell. And Palmer grinning, strumming, singing along, thinking they've got a cool tune. No, this is no Nazareth, this is a steaming, stinking turd.

We can enjoy the same conversations without any sense of deja vu!

I don't think it's even the worst Robert Palmer record actually given he was in the execrable Power Station!

I still think it's the British anthem, but here's one I actually own, and have been nauseating people with since I was a schoolboy
ps, the other side of the single is possibly worse.

That's lovely, Ray, a real gem. It's festive. What is not to like?
I want some warm chestnuts now.

Worst performance rather than record, but whatever...

I saw this again the other night, on some 'Girls with Guitars' BBC Four special.
Weren't they feted by the music press back in the day? This is tripe!

You won't want to hear this but...with the full understanding that their final act (93-96) was decidedly "mid" (songs like "Single Girl" and "Ladykillers"), I think I can summon an eternal cheer for the first half of their career (the three EPs and various other scraps collected on Gala, and bits of Spooky). There was something naively exploratory about their initial efforts that I couldn't get enough of/drew some personal musical inspiration from* (and there is some chance, as we approach that era in the canon, that I might nominate a song or two).
*I MIGHT owe them royalties on the one song that ever made me any real money.

I was looking for this thread the other day, but couldn't find it, when I came across this Stranglers single which I had forgotten about. Can you believe they released this as a single? It's absolutely dreadful!

Whatever you think of Oasis, at least there was a playfulness about them. Sometimes, at least. There was certainly joy - if not always in their hearts, then in the hearts of their fans. They brought it on.
This recent stuff is so fucking earnest. Look at his face! it's like he HAS to get this message across. But what message? 'Council Skies'?!? What the fuck does that mean?
He's one of the wealthiest musicians in the country, he's got a band behind him whose hourly rates are more than what many of us earn in a week, and I bet they've rehearsed until their fingers bleed - and to what end? This useless, pointless, overwrought whitebread crap that you forget the second after it ends.
He had a go at the 1975 the other day, and he was dead right. But I don't think he can hear the worthlessness of his own stuff, sadly. A terrible waste of time.
