1944
Jazz at the Philharmonic (featuring Illinois Jacquet, Nat Cole, Les Paul) - The Blues Hear Illinois Jacquet invent rock and roll in the course of his solo
Since found out that although this concert took place on 2 July 1944, none of the recordings appeared until 1945 at the earliest, including the release of a 3x10" 78 rpm album featuring The Blues and Lester Leaps In spread over three sides each, so I'm shifting this to then, which is NO DISASTER, as it allows me to replace it in 1944 with this three minute wonder, a be-bop big band no less, featuring Dexter Gordon and Gene Ammons. It rocks like a bastard. Play it as loud as you can stand. Billy Eckstine - Blowing My Blues Away

I make no great claims for this, I just love the tune, and as it's played here by its composer, I guess that's how he wanted to be heard Al Bowlly puts in his usual warm tenor's worth. Like this comment on youtube 'I've always considered the delicate string opening to be one of the all-time greatest introductions in dance band history -- it's beautiful and it creates anticipation! Al, with his unerring instincts, paces his vocal masterfully, building gradually to the "I only hope that fate may bring love's story to you" crescendo. Most importantly, he sounds as if he means it! The band's support, in which the rhythm section dominates, with other instruments insinuating themselves into the action, is flawless. I love the muted trumpets' modulation for the instrumental chorus. There are so many subtle but essential details in this landmark record!'

Amos Milburn - Down The Road Apiece
That's what I mean!
Damn, it hurt not to include 'Midnight In The Barrelhouse' though, Johnny Otis Orch. featuring Pete 'Guitar' Lewis...

Is DTRA your 1947 choice? Didn't realize - or had forgotten, I have the Proper records box on this guy - it was that early.
