I have not seen Rick's video, but I wonder if it is as embarrassing as Celine Dion playing the air guitar and doing the duck walk on high heels while singing You Shook Me All Night Long in duet with Anastacia.

S Club 7 are tackling some The Fall numbers in on their next tour. I think they’re doing Hex Induction Hour in full. Rachel Stevens is taking the MES role, complete with trouser piss

I only watched the minute-and-a-half video that JC posted, but I doubt any of those audience members I saw were born yet when The Smiths broke up, or when Rick Astley hit. To them it's all just "'80s music"; even the ones who appreciate the difference between those two artists aren't likely to feel quite the same way about them as someone who was young in 1986 might.

It's just another example of something "underground" that is now being lionised by what some people perceive to be "mainstream" culture. It's the same as the 5 year old wearing a Rolling Stones T-shirt from H&M or your 12 year old liking The Ramones.
It happens to everything eventually. I mean, they'll be having Stockhausen tribute acts in Westfield Shopping Centres by 2050.

You know, I daren't express any kind of dislike for it, because then it's 'relax old man it's all music, they're having fun' 🤷♂️

It was just a really good tribute band who got the gig because of the fame of the people involved. There's no more or less to it than that, surely?

There's one hell of a lot more to it than that.

There are so many layers of irony involved here which means what it 'is' is not clear at all. Is Astley a Smiths fan? Unlikely. But the crowd don't care about that. For them it's just some old songs that used to be cool decades ago fronted by a bloke who's a hit on social media platforms and liked because he takes the piss out of himself.

It was just a really good tribute band and if I'd said that myself, you'd have been one of the first to chime in with 'I didn't think they were that good myself'. Without a doubt!

There is a significant level of snobbery going on from us as well. As if it's fake or unreal.
