How do you know? Do you follow him on twitter? You think he'd do this if he wasn't?

There is a significant level of snobbery going on from us as well. As if it's fake or unreal. Snobbery, yes. I grew up when the Smiths were like an antidote to the plastic chart music that was close to unavoidable. To now see one of Stock Aitken and Waterman's poster-boys singing their songs is bound to rankle. I mean, fair enough if you disagree with me, but pretending not to understand the reasons for the dislike is silly.

What about Kylie? That'd be ok because you fancy her right?

He might quite like them, he's certainly aware of who they are, but I don't think this is some reverential tribute. He's doing it because it's something people don't expect him to do, so it adds to his appeal. I'm sure he had fun doing it, it looked like it anyway!

If you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything

You know, I daren't express any kind of dislike for it, because then it's 'relax old man it's all music, they're having fun' 🤷♂️ We are operating under a different set of rules. When you talk about the absurdity of Astley doing a Smiths tribute act then you have a valid point. It is symbolic of other things, there are layers to this. But as culture has moved on the rules that we grew up with have ceased to be. It simply doesn't Mean As Much therefore when you object you are applying a different set of rules that increasingly looks "old fashioned".

I can't believe I'm defending Rick Astley, btw. Must be a North West pride thing. Big up the Newton Le Willows massive.

Don't think anyone is having a go at Astley DF. The point JC is making is it's ironic to hear a guy cover a song decrying mindless pop when he himself was releasing mindless pop at the time. It seems that whatever meaning the song stood for at the time has been lost. I agree he's good at it.

It seems that whatever meaning the song stood for at the time has been lost. But by the time he himself was 24 or 25, he'd got fed up of the mindless pop himself, and tried a career in a vaguely serious blue-eyed soul way. No idea if he was any good at that, and I ain't listening to any. I just don't think you'd expect him to stick to SAW just because he had a big hit when he was young.
