Just want to put in a plug for that "Faithful Departed" as an absolutely wonderful song (though my favorite version is Chevron's solo version, produced by Elvis Costello (but don't hold that against it).
No accounting for the taste of others - I've long ago stopped trying to convince anyone of what they 'should' like - but I have to say the notion that Christy Moore will do 'any old thing' is patently ridiculous. Whether it's to one's taste or not, I find he has a LONG history of only doing songs that mean something to him. Don't necessarily like how he does everything, but I can't think of a single instance of him aiming for a 'hit' or even a specific genre crossover. He's always done whatever the hell he wanted to at any given moment. (He only stopped Moving Hearts because keeping that big a band operating proved to not be financially viable for very long.)

Moore didn't stop Moving Hearts, he left to go back to his solo stuff. He was replaced by Mick Hanly and they carried on.

"Stopped working with" I should've said. But I think both CM and Hanly said the same thing - they loved the sound it made, but keeping all those people working proved to be difficult to sustain.

I saw them at Celtic Connections in Glasgow around 15 years ago, purely instrumental and no Donal Lunny. Still ripped it up though.

I may be delayed on this one. On my phone right now, and about to travel to Kos in a few hours.

He's always done whatever the hell he wanted to at any given moment. (He only stopped Moving Hearts because keeping that big a band operating proved to not be financially viable for very long.) I'd like to chime in as well. IMO, Chevron has written two songs for the ages, with lyrics that have shaped my own vision of Ireland (the other being the Pogues' Thousands Are Sailing).
What slays me every time in Moving Hearts' cover of Faithful Departed is the lift in the final chorus culminating in "no more tristesse". I've looked up Chevron's version with Costello on YouTube - it's nice, I do prefer it to the band version with the Radiators, I don't mind the slightly different melody and chord sequence, but his voice is a weak point... and he sings "no more regrets" at the end which bothers me most.
But then I've known Christy's version by heart for ages, Oirish accent and all. Moving Hearts were an awesome band. I saw them in late autumn 1981 when I spent a semester at Trinity College in Dublin, shortly before the coldest December/January in UK and Ireland on record, with a state of emergency for a couple of weeks. I was freezing, heartbroken and Christy and the lads' eponymous first album gave me a lot of warmth and solace at the time!! And the spiralling sax/pipes interplay in the instrumental section of Hiroshima Nagasaki Russian Roulette became my ring tone as soon as personalising them with mp3s became possible.
