Is that all it cost? Did you get a concession or something? Whitehaven Gaiety. But in fact VUE tickets are usually a fiver. Even in the cities.

It's a film about a pink doll intended for young girls and gay men. You're not going to be getting Kubrick. I wasn't expecting Kubrick, smart arse, and I think the potential audience is a little wider than you presume. Otherwise it wouldn't have broken box-office records. I was expecting some laughs at least. I don't think Greta Gerwig has much of a sense of humour. I watched it wearing a "Sindy" t-shirt. A couple of patrons asked if they could sit on my knee. I made my excuses and left early.

Why does this read as a terribly inappropriate name ?

I thought Oppenheimer was good, sometimes very good but it fell short of being great and a bit frustratingly so. There's a lot that's good here but I felt he didn't quite go far enough at times. It was also overlong and I was a little bit confused by the time spent on Strauss and the communist stuff which felt a little too pat. I mean, given Oppenheimer's relationships and connections I can understand suspicion but the movie seemed a bit too keen to portray it as being mostly motivated/manipulated by a vengeful Strauss. And yet one of the fellas at Los Alamos was a Russian spy so clearly the commies had infiltrated and Stalin knew about the bomb.
I have to say I found the actual atomic explosion a let down too and I would question Nolan's commitment - mostly admirable - to practical special effects when depicting something of that magnitude and power. I felt he missed a trick there because you cannot even begin to depict an atomic explosion with some exploding gasoline or whatever and CGI would have done a better job. You really could have communicated a lot with a more impactful explosion and this raised a fundamental problem for me. Which is, how do you depict all that stuff in a film? Do you use entirely special effects? CGI? Do you use real life footage? Does Nolan using a shot of a woman's skin peeling off or some vapourised body really communicate the horror of an atomic bomb? Or the terrifying, awesome beauty of a mushroom cloud? This is where I felt Nolan should have went further and used real life footage perhaps because it's the only thing that can. During the celebratory scene where Oppenheimer is giving a speech and people are waving USA flags if they'd cut away to some shots of the aftermath of Hiroshima such as a photo of an atomic shadow where a human being once stood accompanied by awed silence that could have been very powerful and emotional. Instead I felt what they did was unsatisfactory because it couldn't help but create an artificial Hollywood layer between us and the reality which we have all seen in photos and film over the years. In the end no movie can ever really communicate the enormity of Trinity and the atomic age because we ourselves, limited by our intellect and real world experience, still cannot process it all as evolved apes. Instead it hangs around in the background as something abstract and terrifying that occasionally penetrates our consciousness but which we have learned to somehow live with and compartmentalise. Just like death itself I guess.

I couldn't make my mind up if blunt was good or bad in the film, but talking about the film yesterday with my friend, i don't think she was up to scratch. I hope pugh gets a bit time role soon, she's brilliant in everything i've seen her in.

She's had lead roles in quite a few things now. Maybe nothing absolutely HUGE, but she's a pretty big name I'd say.
She reminds me a bit of Saoirse Ronan in that she's in a lot of films, she's always very good, but she doesn't really have an identifiable style. She doesn't bring anything to the work besides competence.
