I just thought it was silly and overwrought and a bit of mess with occasional moments of brilliance - mostly the first section when he's hunting for gold. I like how they juxtapose his death scene with this and that's most of the good I have to say about it. I guess I like it better than you but only a dibby-dab more.
while T.Russel was no doubt talented - I think his dedication to using her in all his films might have had something to do with his undoing. just a theory.

More Cassavetes: this was pretty good but the print quality was probably the worst I've ever seen from a DVD. And there were some woman-slapping scenes that were kind of uncomfortable to watch - surprising that Elaine May wrote and directed the thing! But just seeing Cassavetes and Falk talking is always magical. And it's not improvised!

Bohemian Rhapsody, on a plane the other day.
It was OK. Music biopics are never very good though, are they?

Bohemian Rhapsody. I'd guess 95% of the film's budget went on capturing that Live Aid performance! but it was excellently done, really impressive. I thought that, it was very well done. But the thing is, if you want to see Queen's brilliant performance at Live Aid, you can just watch Queen's brilliant performance at Live Aid. Rather than some other people doing an (albeit very good) impersonation of it.

ahhhhhh....yes and no.
I think it was technically very impressive, in terms of the camerawork, stage design, and the CGI stuff. In many ways it was more exciting visually than the original performance.

Decent enough horror flick about a stag night that goes fairly badly wrong, when the groom to be frees a stripper he thinks is being held against her will, not realising she's some kind of ultraviolent demon.

Under the Silver Lake - great visuals, sound, and music, arse everything else. It's like a student film made by someone that's obsessed with Lynch and Hitchcock but only on a surface level.
Zama - really good political period satire.
The Favourite - not as good political period satire.
August Rush - one of the worst films I've ever seen.
Free Solo - utterly terrifying documentary about some mad rock climber who doesn't use safety equipment. The technical feat of making this is as impressive as the climber himself.
Commando Ninja - stupid as fuck ironic 80s action movie cliche throwback. It's fine for a YouTube video.

Stylishly minimalist horror thriller with a family hiding out in the woods after a mysterious apocalyptic event, taking in another family in need of food and water. It's never clear just what is going on outside: why can't the family stray too far from their home, or go out at all in the night? What exactly is the cause of the lethal illness that strikes if they do? These horrors are always in the background but it's the tension and fear inside that eventually leads to breakdown. The film is well-acted and -directed and looks good - these low-budget horrors are always in the forest, but this one makes some good use of that - but ultimately devolves into predictable and unpleasant "men are the worst monsters" nihilism, with nothing new to say and a decidedly sour and gratuitous feel. Nah.

This, meanwhile, was a lot of fun. I was never a fan of Flight of the Conchords but this is full of great lines and smart scenes. The acting is pitch-perfect, the characters memorable and even at times touching. It's a very funny take on the clash of the supernatural and the everyday. If you don't know, it's a mockumentary about a group of vampires living in modern-day New Zealand; there's a spin-off series starting soon set in New York which has been getting good advance reviews.
