I don't think so, no. Yeah, that one was huge but it was great. And the images in the video - the tears down the face especially - were really affecting. You got a sense of the person, and that was always the case throughout her career. She let herself come to the surface, if you get me. So you felt maybe you knew her - probably more than you felt you knew most popular artists.
I remember when 'Mandinka' came out - a full three years before 'Nothing Compares' - and that was a big hit too. We all fancied the arse off her. She was bold and she was beautiful and she had a hell of a voice. It was only later that you got to know about her difficulties. I think she was never far from our thoughts even though she had kind of a spotty career. But there were other beautiful songs.
That she was a tortured soul and that suicide (which is the likely cause of her death) has brought everything to a sudden end is just a terrible tragedy.

I can't even remember what the follow up to "Nothing Compares.." was?

The latter was a Jah Wobble track that she sung on though.
I'm just saying she wasn't really a major artist in terms of her accomplishments. But I get that she stood out and made quite an impact, and that her story is quite tragic.

Her effect on Ireland which was at that time was still stuck in the 50's with the church playing a huge role was considerable. How do you define a major artist? Sales? Influence?

It's hardly controversial to suggest she wasn't a major artist though is it?

It's just that it's strange when you think about it that she doesn't have that many well known tracks at all.

Mandinka and Nothing Compares aside she passed me by.
I’m not really aware of her influence in Ireland but maybe Markus has some thoughts.

It's hardly controversial to suggest she wasn't a major artist though is it? Of course not. Just that G thought the amount of fuss is all out of proportion to her standing as an artist, or something.

It is but people felt a connection to her like you said. People could relate to her and felt protective towards her too I guess because she was so exposed as a human being.
There's also an element of somebody of a similar age dying for 50 somethings in the media who they grew up with.

If the only they she ever did was Nothing Compares she would still have been remembered. Stating the obvious it was a great record and that video had huge impact. She really knocked it out the park on that one and, yes, she was absolutely beautiful and arresting. It’s hard to think of a more emotionally powerful video tbh.
During my, er, more emotional moments in the last couple of years I’ve watched it and shed a drunken tear for obvious reasons.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who has done the same post break up.

It's not the best way to deal with these things D. My advice would be to go out and have fun no matter what you do.
