1, 9, 20 and the place in Modica. 1 has a legendary rep but it wasn't amazing. Full of tourists too. I thought 9 was pretty good, but, again, not "out of this world". The place in Catania was fine, but to be honest, given the others, this list is probably more about decor and "ambience" than the actual quality of the food overall. Pasticceria Savia was old-school wooden panelling et al, but the gelato was 6 or 7/10. We went to a gelateria in Trapani called Liparoti that had the best granita I've ever had this summer. Mandarin, Pomegranate etc. Tourist complains about tourists. Probably dressed wrongly into the bargin.

Ghiradelli chocolate is not very good. A trainee teacher brought me some back from the States years ago. It was good chocolate by US standards, which doesn't say much. We should be doing better than Bettys, ffs. We're famous for afternoon tea! Where can you get good scones with jam and clotted cream? Where's the best apple crumble? Pretty much any NT property would do a great (relatively cheap)cream tea… but the last time I got one there was no teapot. Just a cup with a tea bag. This country

The proliferation of the godforsaken COSTA COFFEE has pushed a lot of good tearooms out of the high street. And their cakes and pastries are absolute shite.
As I think I've said before - a Lidl pain au chocolat honestly beats anything you pay 2 or 3 quid for in any of those rotten chains. I don't know how they do them so cheaply but they're excellent.

You wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the ones that Lidl pop out of their ovens several times a day, and the ones you buy in a Parisian patisserie.

Have you tried them, Jimmy? I'm talking specifically about Lidl's pain au chocolat - the other pastries they do are rubbishe.
Aldi don't do anything of the sort - not sure what LQ is talking about

I quite like Costa’s cakes (their Tiffin is lovely). Better than Starbucks. But I like Starbucks coffee.

I guess I am lucky in Greece, with food in general. Pastries and cakes all seem to have a taste depending on the bakery. Similar to how you would be able to tell the difference in other chippies batter or chips. In the U.K , you are more likely to have little difference in the supermarket ranges. In a lot of places in Europe the pastry section tends to be supplied by a certain bakery. So you can go to the same branch in one place but many things, such as pastries taste different.
Lists like these are pointless, it often is a case of where their supplier is, rather than the rustic store front and ambience. The best bread on our island , pastries too come from the most unlikely places.
When I lived in the u.k, egg custards were the litmus test.

Can't speak to most of these places, and don't really know any of the non-US ones that well, but I will say that I see at least one glaring omission - Veniero's in NYC - and a few overrated ones. Café Du Monde and Ghirardelli are certainly tourist experiences that one should have at least once in their life, but I'm not at all convinced the actual product at either place is unusually superior to their competitors, which are pretty close by in both places and likely to be more relaxing and less crowded.
I suspect this is true of most of these places - it does say 'most legendary' rather than best - but I do at least have a checklist for when I'm in the places next (which is, unfortunately, no time soon for most of these locations).
