I wish I could say I've been to several of these joints. Maybe three or four. Actually I queued to get in the New York Cafe in Budapest last week but when I got close to being seated I made a run for the door. The prices were through the fucking roof. Surprising to see Istanbul have two mentions in the top ten. Turkey isn't a country I associate with good desserts. ANYWAY the place mentioned at the bottom...I was in Thessaloniki about 15 years ago and tried a trigona there. It's a triangle of phyllo pastry and they fill it with vanilla custard. This place has these pastry cones piled up in racks, ready to be filled. It sells nothing else. And it's honestly one of the greatest things I've ever tasted. I'll never forget it. Anyone been to any in the US? What about Betty's in York (I think there are other branches)?

Betty's actually started in Harrogate ( I was there last week, saw the plaque and everything). Never been in that one or York, seems a weird thing to queue for hours for. My local patisserie ( harwoodspatisserie.co.uk/about-us/) won every round of Bake Off: The Professionals, other than the final, so I reckon that should be in the list.

I've been to number 1. lovely. Those things are different to the pastel de nata you get everywhere now I think, aren't they?

Have you ever had loukoumades, J? They're like little bite-sized spiced doughnuts filled with honey that explode in your mouth and are totally addictive.

5 (beignets) were terrific, but not sure they were any better than the other places I’ve had them. Ghiradelli chocolate is not very good.

And 35. Original Sachertorte. Too sweet for me, but glad I tried it.

Ghiradelli chocolate is not very good. A trainee teacher brought me some back from the States years ago. It was good chocolate by US standards, which doesn't say much. We should be doing better than Bettys, ffs. We're famous for afternoon tea! Where can you get good scones with jam and clotted cream? Where's the best apple crumble?

1, 9, 20 and the place in Modica.
1 has a legendary rep but it wasn't amazing. Full of tourists too. I thought 9 was pretty good, but, again, not "out of this world". The place in Catania was fine, but to be honest, given the others, this list is probably more about decor and "ambience" than the actual quality of the food overall. Pasticceria Savia was old-school wooden panelling et al, but the gelato was 6 or 7/10.
We went to a gelateria in Trapani called Liparoti that had the best granita I've ever had this summer. Mandarin, Pomegranate etc.

The tea museum in Southwark Street used to do a great cream tea, but it closed down. So no idea really.
