MGMT!
I didn't see them in any of the lists....yeah, something off that debut would probably be my choice too. That was a fine fine record.

'kids' was good, but the album itself was disappointing. Not listened to it in years. I really need to do a Googa style purge. I reckon I can get my cd collection down to about 150 albums.

2007
Like I said, a decent year in comparison to others around the same time but the album of the year was Oracular Spectacular by MGMT. Although, I am cheating a little bit with Kids as it was released a couple of years earlier on the Time To Pretend EP but they redid it, gave it a more electro boogie makeover, turned up the volume knob and hey presto! Although the singles didn't hit until the next year MGMT were the last time I can really recall an indie band breaking through and actually having something you could vaguely describe as a pop culture moment that crossed over into something bigger. At least it felt like that at the time. Kids itself is an irresistible thing powered by a childlike keyboard hook that doesn’t quit and a sense of wide-eyed innocence and wonder that sounded effortless and vaguely psychedelic. In fact, different musical settings aside it wasn’t that far removed from the world of Nuggets or Syd Barrett and the clue was in the singers affected accent. For a brief moment they seemed like a genuine bright new hope and although the more ornery follow up had its moments they never fully recaptured the brief pop magic of their debut. In fact they seemed to wilfully turn away from it all as if writing good pop songs, having hits and hitting on supermodels were somehow bad things. By the time they released the third album it was all lost but for a moment these couple of oddballs who looked like they’d stumbled on stage from some all night rave on a Californian beach seemed to “have it".
Ach well.

You say that but just wait till the Bent Fabric reissue campaign starts. Super deluxe editions ahoy! Bliss.

We’re onto the whole Pitchfork poptimism era now. I have absolutely nothing in common culturally with the millennial generation. Kathy Perry as the new Beatles, Carly Rae Jespen as the new Beefheart, Beyoncé as a genius, fucking Single Ladies comparing in any way to the 1963 choices? Big hat country pretty boys on the pop charts, mumble rap. It’s very difficult to get excited over any of this. Worst of all was the thankfully brief “waifs with ukuleles” art pop movement.

From Kids to Dad Rock - I know there's all sorts of anti-Wilco sentiment around these parts, but I find this to be a thing of beauty, plus it has a fantastic guitar solo. Who doesn't like fantastic guitar solos? Only losers, that's who.

2007
2007 has absolutely tons of stuff, I'm hoping someone will pick Alcest at least, but I'm going for the big guns this time round. Burial are unlucky not to have been picked already, having been one of the definitive artists of the dance scene at the time, and THE major name in dubstep. Since Untrue, he's released a trickle of lazy and slightly naff EPs, but right at this time he was vital. This to me is the sound of an early morning hangover, the feeling of lying in bed in uneasy half-sleep with daylight just creeping through the curtains, a dull feeling of nausea, and your head pounding with a vague recollection of last nights tunes.

I was about to pass for 2007 because I couldn't find anything selectable in the list of albums of the year on wiki, which is where I go when I have no clues, apart from the Wilco and MGMT records already picked. But then I recalled an album, mysteriously not present in that apparently exhaustive list, that is among my faves of the decade. So
2007 Bettye LaVette - Somebody Pick Up My Pieces
This album was part of her comeback run that had started a couple of years before, after two decades of obscurity. The album was recorded at Muscle Shoals with members of Drive-By Truckers and some musicians from the legendary period of Fame Studios. This song is a version of a late Willie Nelson song that LaVette moves into soul territory is a most brilliant way (if you have not heard the original with WN and Emmylou Harris harmonizing, do yourself a favour and look for it). The wonderful steel guitar solo is the cherry on top. A recommendable delicatessen.

"Berry Metal" Metallic Falcons
Had a ton from 2006 (Asobi Seksu, Beach House, Liars, Jay Reatard, Norfolk&Western etc..) but decided to go with this haunting piece of Desertshore-esque beauty..

That's just a phenomenally beautiful piece of music, a great choice. Your last pick was interesting, too, never heard of them before.

With a bit of thought I realized that I actually prefer this to "Atlas." But they were refreshing, playful, spirited, yet 'modern' and 'experimental.' Downright silly at times, in fact.
One way or another, easily my 'record of the year' for 2007. Something new that I actually got excited about. Hasn't happened much in the last couple decades...

The album is called 'Desert Doughnuts' and is a one-off project from half of Cocorosie (Sierra Casady) and folkie Matteah Baim..It's a really beautiful listen..

Opening for 2008. I'M going to try and move things a bit quicker from now on given there's less interest in these years.
