Vs Both accepted as talented pop song writers, with a sharp wit and deep meaning songs. Who did it better?

McAloon's going to walk it. He always does when you talk to serious music fans.

Beautiful South were terrible. Really terrible.. so it's Macaloon by default.

McAloon by miles.
I've met them both, and McAloon is a much nicer bloke too.
Heaton has the stronger voice tho'.

Beautiful South were terrible. Really terrible. I liked their first single an awful lot (Song for Whoever) and still do, but yeah, they were pretty ghastly overall. Heaton gets all this praise for being some sort of great lyricist too, and most of the time you just think, what?!?? He's written some real howlers.

I quite like 'Old Red Eyes Is Back'
Was he a bit of a cunt, Nick, or was it just that McAloon was nicer?

I quite like 'Old Red Eyes Is Back' Was he a bit of a cunt, Nick, or was it just that McAloon was nicer? Actually yeah, that one is a good lyric too. I think it's more the later stuff that's really awful, from the mid-90s onwards. I lived just along Grafton Street in Hull from Heaton in 1993-94, and you'd see him in one of the local pubs, often absolutely hammered and sometimes acting a bit of a twat. I knew someone who lived next door to him and they said he could be a bit of a bellend, annoying for the sake of it, you know? He used to own the King's Head in Salford and we've seen him a few times in there in recent years, he seemed calmer and more normal then. The Prof knew him pretty well in the 80s, when he was at college in Hull too. So I wouldn't say Heaton's a cunt, but Paddy McAloon is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. An absolute gent.

If only for Steve McQueen it’s McAloon and it’s not even close.
Heaton is one of those people who does have talent but produces irritating shit you'd expect to hear in B&Q. You suspect he would have produced better records in an earlier era.

"The King Of Rock n Roll" is one of the fucking biggest sloppiest turds ever put to record. I haven't heard all of Paul Heaton's recorded works, but I can say without any hesitation whatsoever that he hasn't done anything as bad as that.

I think Heaton's definitely got the ear for a proper pop tune, and an occasional knack of a good self-deprecating lyric or low-key wit. I couldn't tell you much about McAloon, other than I've never heard an interesting Prefab Sprout track.
